How much memory will I need for this task?

So, I have a Dell XPS L501X with 4gb RAM and Core i3. Now, i'm looking to do some work on it at home, but not sure whether I need more memory. I will be having to open Excel files of a fair few gigabytes with maybe over 4 million records.

Would this be a huge memory hog or CPU hog? I just want to know before I start bringing stuff home and realise I don't have the power to work!

Excel is a memory hog it hogs the CPU but as soon as it finishes loading it dumps onto the memory.

I would recommend you get another 2gb at least

But 8gb will be pref

run the file then open task manager to see how much memory excel is using. I would say 4gb would be enough. I dont think excel would be a cpu hog even with a file that big, an intel i3 would be more than enough.

Well, I can't really open it since I have never brought work home. Suppose I could try and check at work though. I just worry it'll kill everything.

I tried opening a file with a few million records in Open Office/Libre Office and it killed it.

4gb should be enough, or right at enough. But if your unsure, more RAM or even more then you need is never a bad thing. So even if you don't need it, future proof yourself or just keep what ya got!

Yea, but obviously I don't want to spend more than I have to. I was interested to see whether anyone else carried out any similar processes and knew what sort of RAM it used up?

Sigh, tried a 5gb Excel CSV file and it died a painful death
