[ReadWriteWeb] Microsoft Research Open-Sources Experimental Operating System

microsoft working on open-source OS.

Quote:
ETH Zurich open-sourced an experimental operating system called BarrelFish, which it built in conjunction with Microsoft Research. The purpose of BarrelFish is to explore the best ways to structure OSes for multicore systems.

BarrelFish is a completely new OS "built from scratch," so it doesn't depend on any proprietary Microsoft components. The source code is available under an MIT license.

You won't ever see that hit mainstream, ever. You might see the server market and a few others but never in mainstream. They will take all the research they gained and pump it into a new Windows, make it faster and better. This is just a very cheap way for them to do R&D on their core components.

I'm trying to be optimistic by imagining microsoft acting like google but i know it aint happening.

It's written from scratch, no Microsoft proprietary crap. YAY!

Hopefully the core development with Barrelfish get's integrated into Windows - it NEEDS a complete rewrite from scratch. NT was wayyy to long ago.

All it has is command line, no GUI and so far none planned yet. You could build an entire FOSS setup, though this is probably going to be harder than LFS.
