Looking for 12GB of DDR3 2000? (Maybe?)

With today's drop in prices on DDR3, and all the sales at the Egg lately...

It looks like a great time to upgrade!

I was going to have to buy another set of RAM for second i7 budget rig anyways, so I figure I can move my sig rig RAM to it and upgrade that. To that end I've been looking at a couple of kits, but would appreciate someone slapping my wrist if I'm reaching for the wrong cookie jar.

These are the kits I've been considering:

CORSAIR Vengeance 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 @ $114.99
Kingston HyperX 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3 1866 @ $169.99
Patriot Viper II ‘Sector 7’ Edition 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3 2000 @ $159.99

Ergo my dilemma. Do I really want the PC3 16000 RAM? Or am I fine staying with PC3 12800? Alternatively, if you all have other deals to recommend that I may not have seen I would be much indebted.

Thanks!

Corsair vengeance will be plenty for your rig.

Really good ram, tbh you wont need the extra 400mhz

Bet you can always overclocks it

Aye I don't disagree about not noticing the 400mhz in real world scenarios. I was actually wondering more about benches, folding, etc. And then there's that ever elusive 7.9 from WEI. If I dump a LN/2 pot on the board and slot in a 970 I maybe able to get that PITA.

Also, something I never really did get the long and short of: does the 1.5V vs 1.65V really matter for the CPU mem controller?

Bump. Still looking for some opinions!

EDIT: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 for $74.99. Could I snag two sets of this and use three sticks in my mobo? And if so would it be worth it?

The above option seems to work for cheap - Intel platforms usually prefer high speed over timings. You will have to keep the fourth set for warranty purposes. You may also wish to install the fourth set, nothing wrong with that. When using under 12GB flex memory will ensure the memory works at triple channel, and I can imagine most of the time your usage will stay under 12GB (I don't even max 8GB and I perform many RAM-intensive tasks). However, when using the 16th GB (highly unlikely IMO) the setup may revert to single channel and you will lose performance. There is no dual channel mode in LGA1366 or so I heard, with 4 DIMMs; 2 DIMMs will run in dual channel. 4 DIMMs will work so as the first 3 DIMMs run triple channel, but the fourth one will revert everything to single channel when used.

You've reached a system bottleneck on your current 6GB of RAM?

Too many things open at once is usually a culprit. I also log game information from RIFT for damage/healing data, and that leaks memory. For instance right now, I'm sitting at 4.5GB.

None of that was important though. I need a second set of memory for a budget i7 build, and with the price drops of memory lately, I thought to retire the set I'm using in my sig rig to the budget rig, and upgrade the sig rig.

Ergo my original query =)

Thanks a lot for the answer xd
