That's your opinion as you already stated.

D2 was probably my favorite game of all time, but I don't like Titan Quest much at all. I have TQ: Immortal Throne currently installed on my system and I've played it maybe 30 hours total (which is still about 15 hours more than D3 beta). So far I have invested well over 200 hours into PoE and it's still in early beta and I'm even taking a break from it right now to type this.

BTW, Path of Exile started development back in 2007. It wasn't started to compete with D3, but it has already surpassed D3 in my book. Many others on PoE feel the same way. If you don't like it then don't play it. thumb.gif

I paid the $10 for the closed beta access.
Been fun so far, and will tide me over till D3.

When you're an indie developer (a definition that includes Grinding Gear and Runic and Crate), marketing is usually near the bottom of the to-do list. You're usually too busy channeling your limited resources into building the actual game. You hope that once it's done, you'll be able to get the word out and drum up customers. This is another reason why nobody is trying to compete head-to-head with D3; you could take the entire development budgets for these three studios, combine them, triple that number, and you're still probably coming up far short of Blizzard's marketing budget for D3. (Crate is now doing a kickstarter for Grim Dawn, and they're only asking for $280K to help finish it. Blizzard will spend ten times that figure on launch-week TV ads alone.)

But once all that D3 advertising is spent, gamers will be a lot more aware of the ARPG subgenre. That's where limited marketing in the right places can help the small studios, and that's why they're all sitting back and letting Blizzard do the heavy lifting.

I've been driven away from various games in the past due to the tediousness of inventory management... kill one mob, 15 different loots drop..... time for another town portal... not really "fun". breaks up the game tempo too much for it to be enjoyable. there have been games that i've played that literally forces you to go back to town after every 3 to 5 kills... it's a turn off and not really worth the time to invest into a game. developer need to understand that the most expensive resources a player can invest into a game is TIME. the more time that is wasted into mundane things like inventory management, the less interesting the game becomes in the long run. nobody ever praised a game by saying how much time they spent traveling back and forth to the town so they can clean out their inventory and selling junk.... I hope this gets taken care of before the game is released.

I agree. Titan Quest had expandable storage space to reduce the number of trips to town, and Torchlight made everything the same size. Both ideas were improvements on the Diablo storage system, but PoE uses the old method.

I'm in the school of the best advertising is word of mouth advertising. however, to get word of mouth advertising rolling, there must be awareness of the game. this is where riding on the tidal wave that D3 is creating benefits the small studios like GGG. however in order to surf the wave of D3 publicity, they need to get in JUST before D3 so the momentum of D3 can carry it along. those starving for ARPG action would be looking for something and if they happen to find PoE, then they'll definitely try it out.

IMO PoE is strong enough to stand on it's own feet. so the only obstacle is to get the awareness out and the best way (cheapest) is to ride the publicity that D3 has created. I'm not saying they need to spend more $ in marketing, i'd rather they spend it in development. i'm saying it's a timing thing and open beta / release date contribute HUGELY to the awareness and success of a game.

I disagree here. PoE is still loaded with bugs (check the bug report forums), it's missing polished game content, and many features still need tweaking. There's a lot of work to do not counting the additional 2 acts they are adding. There is no way PoE will be ready for release in a month. It will be lucky to see release in 6 months.

It's much better to release a finely polished game than to release an unfinished game just to make a deadline. People who play the unfinished game and don't like it may never come back later to see if it's better. They will make their judgement right then and that's it. Plus they will only say negative things about it. PoE already gets some of that negative rumor from the beta version (people don't seem to understand what beta means).

Just read through the posts in this thread alone and you'll find some comments that are based on things that are planned but not implemented yet. Imagine if it was the release and it was like it is...

Yes, they are always running. Occasionally they are restarted to update which takes like 1 minute.

Very occasionally a new patch is released and it has to be downloaded before playing. It has never taken me more than a few minutes to download an update. But it's relative to size of course.
