But going with your logic Doom is a clone of Quake.

W/e... I forgot, it can't be an attempted clone since they changed the plot... Because the plot is what makes a game of this genre. Without the plot, the game is nothing.

D3 is brighter than D2 which was brighter than D1. That really has no bearing. If it does, then not even D2 or D3 are Diablo.

Just because a few things are changed doesn't mean it's not a clone. Torchlight is also a clone.

Path of Exile has more in common with Diablo than other other clone has ever had, yet you say it's more like Titan Quest. PoE is not about Greek Mythology nor is it shiny. Where's your logic on that?

Edit: No, it's not a clone...

After playing it for the last few hours I can see a lot of game time from me going into this game. There's even dungeons and a light radius (to whomever said there are no dungeons in this game). I was in my first dungeon by level 5. Also, a lot has changed since the video review that was posted in this thread. That review is months old.

I previously called this game a Diablo clone. But I feel I should amend that statement and say this is the game that is going to replace D2. I'm really digging this game and it's still in beta.

I played the game for about 2 hours so far and I can say that at first I was really impressed. I thought it was pretty damn good to be free. In fact I still think it's really good (for a free game) but being in the Diablo III beta and now this one as well there really is no comparison Diablo III gameplay wise is hands down better.

Now of course the AH thing for Diablo III kind of sucks so if that bothers you this game might be a good alternative.

Graphics wise I'd say this even being in beta might look a *tad better then Diablo III. Honestly I'd have to give Path of Exile the edge there.

Inventory management though is atrocious in Path of Exile. To me that is the deal breaker. These kind of games are ALL about the loot and I'm sorry but even if you only pick up blue items or better you will never go more then 2 minutes w/o having to run back to town or use a portal.

I won't say game play in general is bad b/c it really isn't but the inventory does suck and if they don't fix that I simply couldn't play the game.

The skill tree (from the little I saw) is absolutely HUGE. People who like to have more control over their characters would probably enjoy this game more so then Diablo III. At first it does seem "deeper" then what it really is though as if you zoom out it is fairly easy to see what path you would want to go down based on your character class. Regardless it sill does have more to offer in terms of "choices" I'd say then I've seen in an action rpg in a long time.

All in all if you are only going to play one game and have no problem paying I still think Diablo III is the better game. If the AH thing just really pisses you off or if you prefer having some more control over the path your character takes you may enjoy Path of Exile more.

Obviously it should be said both games are still in Beta and there is still a TON of content that both games offer that no one has seen yet. So this shouldn't be taken as anything set in stone.

I guess you never played D2 then? The character inventory is no different than it was in D2 and the stash is 4x bigger and is a shared stash... Not to mention that you don't have to carry around charms like you did in D2 which drastically reduced the inventory space (I never had more than 8 spare squares in D2 with all the charms). I hope they leave the inventory alone.

You're right, these games are all about the loot. As well as prioritizing what to pickup and what not to pickup. When you're trying to sell things for gold (or w/e) then ofc your inventory is going to fill up a lot. When you're not trying to do that then you aren't keeping much and can go for much much longer without having to go to town.

Edit: Correction. PoE character stash is bigger than D2 was by 20 squares. D2 had 40 squares PoE has 60 squares and the items are the same sizes.

I have some minor quibbles with the inventory system at the moment (I'd like them to adopt Torchlight's system of using a right-click to move an item from inventory to stash/market)... but I'm enjoying the beta so far. It's not as pretty as the D3 beta, but it's also $60 cheaper.

I saw in the chat tonight that the developers are hoping to have the game in full "open beta" in two months. Me likey. biggrin.gif

EDIT: Okay, looks like shift-leftclick moves an item. Yay!

Yeah, I agree. There's several little things they need to do. They probably plan on doing them but haven't gotten to them yet. Like allowing the map to be smaller. I never did like the full screen map even on D2. I always used the mini-map. If that's possible then I haven't figured it out yet. But I don't think it is.

I don't want a pretty game. I want it gloomy and dark, like a lot of it is. wink.gif

I have zero complaints with the graphics.

As for the inventory management issue some people seem to be having... it's not even an issue for me now at level 17. I rarely pick up anything unless it's yellow, it's something I may use, or it's a ring/amulet. I can clear entire areas and still not need to hit town and I do have some mf (like 45). All of those items you get from trading? I'm finding the full items that 20 of the little ones create at an alarming rate. Hardcore vendoring is a waste of time at my level... But if people like picking up every blue item they come across, let them I suppose.

LOVING this game! Hopefully they send out more closed beta keys soon, would suck to have to wait for so long after this weekend.

According to the random invite timer thing on the main page they send out a beta invite every 5 minutes. I'm not sure how long that's been going on, but it would be a ton of invites.

Well, assuming the timer isn't random too. I only watched it once and it started a new invite with 5 minutes until the next.

Edit: I just watched it turn over to 5 minutes again. But there's an "Hours" label too. So I'm guessing it's either random or they change the frequency whenever they feel like it.
