well, got to merciless last night (lvl 54 witch). No real issues, tbh. Just spamming zombies (max 8), skeletons (max 11), specters (max 2) and cold snap (frostbite curse + AoE increase + elemental proliferation).

Slight issue with medicine chest boss, but he was beaten pretty easily when I stopped trying to freeze him (he has crazy resist, I guess) and just spammed skeletons. My mana regen is higher than the max mana/s use by summon skeleton, so yea....

You have the ability to chance the best items in the game.

Biggest part of this economy that works is the fact that curency is a usable item. That means, the economy will auto level itself as high end currency isn't just value as a currency, but as an actual usable item. Keeps everything in line.

Heavy Strike's physical damage now increases by 5% per level rather than 4%.

As a 4.3k dps heavy strike char at lvl 58, this makes me very happy.

No, but to sustain your map pool you have to a lot of crafting, kripparian made a pretty nice video about it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iosDjzeLKY.
I think you can summary it as:
-level 67 maps or lower: use transmutations
-level 68: use transmutations, alterations and augmentation
-level 69: use alch and chaos
-level 70: use alch, chaos and chisels
-level 71-74: use more chaos
-level 75+: use trans, alt, aug, regal, scouring, exalteds

I am already losing my willpower to farm exp at 61... I hope what you're saying about maps isn't the only thing I have to look forward to.

You can run WW spec or a variant of HOTA. In the end you have 2 choices if you want to be efficient. Look at the Marauder for POE. You can make a physical or elemental bow spec, 2h spec, 1h + shield caster, or summoner. That is just 4 broad specs. Within them you can specialize such as going for a ground slam build, or sweep, or leap slam Even a combination using 3 for various purposes.

You are still kinda pigeon holed into putting about 4/5 skill points into defensive nodes for hp and resists and filler nodes (dex, str, and int nodes) because of the absurd damage output of some monsters and because some of it is almost unavoidable. I have about 20 points in hp nodes and I can still get almost one shoted even with maxed resists at level 73 on lvl 66 maps. How to win at this game: Get maximum hp with some % hp regen, maximum resists, get life leach, blood magic, OPed skills on 5-6L gear. And hope you win the lottery to get good gear. Or multibox farm.

It is obvious bad design when your only option to make the game challenging is to give insane dmg output and cheap skills with alot of hp to mobs.

What build are you running? How much armor do you have? What is your chaos resist?

If you are max resists but still getting almost 1 shot in level 66 maps, at your current level, you either have low physical resists from lack of armor or evasion conversion or you are getting rocked by chaos damage. The game doesn't cheat just because you are in maps. You are getting hit by a form of damage you are weak against. The map mods also play into this deficiency. Depending on your spec there are some map mods that you just might not be able to do at any level effectively.

The point and comparison is about choice. You can go anywhere you want on the passive skill tree. The "filler" nodes directly influence how much you can level your gems. They also directly benefit your offensive and defensive stats. You aren't pigeon holed at any point. In fact, as your gear level increases you can even respec out of some of the defensive talents in the tree and become more offensive. If anything the tree helps bridge the gear gap.

I think players get too caught up in the posted builds they see. Most of these builds are for hardcore characters that prioritize health and resists above all else.
