"Path of Exile is an online Action RPG set in the dark fantasy world of Wraeclast. We're a small independent team of hardcore gamers based in New Zealand and have created Path of Exile as the game that we'd want to play ourselves. It is designed around a strong barter-based online item economy, deep character customisation, competitive PvP and ladder races. The game is completely free and will never be 'pay to win'."

Players can choose from 6 character classes (as noticed in the poll above) that revolve around the three core attributes of strength, intelligence, and dexterity:
Each class shares a passive skill tree with each class starting in the location that corresponds to their attributes. As you begin completing quests and leveling up in Path of Exile, you can begin to completely customize your character and move about the massive skill tree however you see fit.

How the Game Works
Quote:
If you die in hardcore, your character and on person inventory all goes with you to default league. Your hardcore stash remains intact.
In the future GGG will implement tournaments and races that players can create characters in. Some talked about ideas are "cut throat" where players can invade other players map instances and kill them to steal their loot, and races that last 24-48 hours or a week in which the player who is highest level at the end of the time period wins. Like hardcore, once the "event" is over, your character will revert back to its parent league (ie if its a hardcore race event, and you haven't died at the end; your character will go to the regular hardcore league)
More information about leagues.
At this point in time, there are only two leagues. Default (softcore) and Hardcore. Unlike some other games, in hardcore when your character dies, it reverts to default league. This is nice given the complexity of the game, so that you can continue to test or work on your build to see if its viable for higher difficulties.

MONSTERS
There are a lot and GGG keeps adding more! One of the many great things about PoE is that all the skills and attacks monsters use, are the same ones that you can use as a character! This means that you can, and should, become very familiar with all the skills and effects. Additionally, monsters scale in difficulty with the maps. In PoE you will notice that each map (or location on the world map) has a level. This corresponds with the monster level in the area, and the world map as a whole scales with the difficulty your character is in (i.e. normal, cruel, and merciless). Additionally, there are champion and unique monsters in the game who are substantially more powerful. Unique monsters can have auras that make them, and any allies around them much more deadly. The auras work the same as they would on a hero, in that the unique monster doesn't have minions, but the aura buffs all enemies who may be around it, regardless of if they are champions, other uniques, etc... This means you need to know what you are getting yourself into!

*Note that some currency items like cartographer's chisel interect with maps.
PoE is a game of barter. As such, there is no gold. No gold sinks, no repair costs, no nonsense! Currency in the game takes the form of useful items. These items can include orbs that change the properties of an item, re-rolls items values, can change the number of sockets or links in an item, or can turn a common into a rare! This being the case, It is helpful to know what each item does, and what its good for in order to place a value on it. (read more about items in the "Weapons and Armor" below). Anything you do in Path of Exile that would normally cost gold in other games, uses this currency instead.
Read the Grinding Gear Games philosophy as to why they did not want gold in the game.
Comprehensive list of PoE currency!
Players aquire currency by exploring maps. Chests, killing monsters, etc... You can also aquire currency when you sell items to a vendor (see vendor recipe link below in the "...some more good info" section). When you vendor items, depending on their attributes, their socket color/links, and their rarity and quality, vendors will give you either scraps or shards which turn into actual useful currency when the correct quantity is reached, or will give you actual useful currency for your items!

Active skills in PoE come in the form of gems that are used by socketing them into weapons and armor. Gems have attribute requirements based on their type and level and gain experience as you slay enemies. The higher the quality and level of a skill gem, the better the skill is or becomes. The skills are based off of the prime attributes; strength, dexterity, and intelligence.

In addition to active skill gems, skills can be compeltely customized and transformed into even more powerful skills that take on different effects. This is done by using support gems. Support gems can be linked to skill gems to modify the base skill to add the effects of the support gem. Support gems of any color can be linked to skill gems of any color provided the correct combination of linked colored sockets is present in the particular item in which you want to socket them. (see below "weapons and armor"). Additionally, a single support gem can be linked to multiple skill gems so that each active skill retains the effects of the support.

Remote skills are used the same way as active or support skills. They are in the same form of gems, but when the skill is used the effect is allowed to be placed (i.e. "remotely") somewhere on the map.

Lastly, there are white gems in PoE that can be found which can be placed into any color socket to give you skills such as town portal so you don't have to use scrolls.

As noted in the skills section, gear you find in PoE (armor and weapons) have colored sockets that can be "linked" together. This partly determines usefulness and value. this means that even non-rare or non-magic items can be valuable! Remeber all it takes is an orb of alchemy or some other currency item to turn a 6 linked socketed non-magic item into a rare!

***DISCLAIMER*** Before delving into any of these builds to end up pissed off later in the game, do your research! Read the threads and feedback as well as the reasons behind certain aspects of the build. Doing so is the only way to know what you need on your gear as well as resistance/armor/evasion/energy shield/life/mana thresholds etc.
Additionally, I am going to avoid posting specific builds because there are no "cookie cutter" builds per se. You can literally do anything. The general idea builds exist, but even then are modified depending on what items you have access to (ie taking a +armor node or + life node instead of resistance node or a +accuracy node over + elemental dmg node etc depending on what your gear is lacking at the time).
Duelist
Marauder
Ranger
Shadow
Templar
Witch
*TIP* Look for the threads that have a lot of feedback, as well as threads from members that have been playing the game for a long time (guys that have support tags and what not)
