Any Upgrade better than HD 6970 LOL

Thread Starter
I currently have 2 HIS 6970(Factory overclocked to 900MHZ).Ive been looking for 6990 but cant find it online or in store.I know its underclocked from 6970. I was looking if pairing a GTX 580 3Gb Ver. would provide more performance.Resolution is like most 1920X1080.I was also searching for GTX 590 but ive read that its slower than HD 6990 based on searching(no personal experience).I want to do Tri Cf or Quad.

Specs

22inch Monitor(1920X1080)
Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 AM3+ with support for Crossfire or Sli.( 3 slots for Tri Crossfire or SLI)
1080W Power Supply
16GB Corsair Vengeance 1600DDR3

What Processor? Any AMD processor out now will bottleneck dual 6970s very badly, and we don't know about BD just yet. Get three 6970s, or two, either way you'll max out all games at that res. 3GB 580s will show no improvement over the 1.5GB at that res, and the 6970s will be much better for much cheaper. Remember, 2x6970s beat a 580 by a lot and are only like 100 or so USD more, and 3x6970s beat 2x580s by a lot and are only 100USD or so more.

Your best bet is to sell 1 6970 and buy a 6990 and trifire. If you're not happy with the trifire performance, I think your expectations aren't ever going to be met.

At 1920x1080 you don't really need much more horsepower than what you have now. If you're having performance issues, I'd look at your CPU.

Regardless, the options at the high end are pretty clear. You have two of the fastest single GPUs in crossfire, so the obvious next step is to quad-crossfire/sli the fastest dual GPU cards.

Don't even waste the money, you are being bottlenecked right now. Heck, with that processor your best bet is to sell one 6970 and just have one. A 955 won't ever be able to keep up with two 6970s, no matter what OC. Yes, the 955 and 965 are the same.

I lul'd. Is anybody on OCN reasonable anymore? 2 of those cards aren't even necessary at that res. If you're really itching to blow all that hard earned money, why don't you look into a tri-monitor setup. And why in God's name are you wanting a 3gb 580 for that res?

Is more than one 6970 even needed for 1080p? Xfire 6970 is really for eyefinity.

It is. 60FPS isn't even the average in most games that I play with 1x6970. BC2, Metro, STALKER on max with many mods, and other games.

No.

But I have two and I like it.

That said, my old 1090t did not bottleneck these cards at all. I switched to 2500k and while there is no doubt it smoke the 1090t, I get the same performance in games.

The SAME FPS.

FWIW.
