You can't go wrong with the NH-D14, but make sure it fits!
the NH-D14 is so easy to install, I dont know what hassle you are talking about.

I love my d14, and the stock fans are plenty good enough and quiet

nh-d14 is definitely the best air cooler around. it's a daily deal on newegg right now 79$ shipped. my old 212+ did a great job too. those are nice and cheap as well.

Thanks all, I think I'll go with the NH-D14 or the H80, depends really. I should flip a coin. I read up on the NH-D14 installation and you're right it's not much.

The AM3 and AM3+ are exactly the same mounting for cooling if I'm not mistaken. So it shouldn't be anymore of a hassle than putting it in. I mean did you think they would make a board that would run AM3 and Bulldozer with different cooling configurations? There are only a couple extra pins on the CPU, right? So it would look exactly like the AM3 when it is in the socket...

Edit: You have a nice mobo, why risk blowing it for not spending $80? $80 is better than $250 in my mind.

Go with the H70. Too loud for some? OK, then get a Zallman 10xx, or wait for the H100. I'm interested in that one myself. Anyway, we're all right about one thing: Your stock fan is only good for stock freq's!

You are going to need a after market cooler. These Phenoms run very cool considering they are 6 cores but at high frequencies/volts they get hot and you want to keep these things under 60 degrees. You should be able to hit 4ghz without any issues at 1.45v with a decent after market cooler.

Good Luck

Thanks for all the feedback btw. And you're right, I wouldn't want to risk blowing up a $250 motherboard.

I'd like some more details on probable safe and stable frequencies I can achieve after getting a decent aftermarket cooler like the NH-D14 or H80/H100 though. I'm aware every chip is different and can have different frequency achievements on different variables but I'd just like a basic idea. I'd really like to get 4.3-4.5+ stable on safe voltages and temps, tell me if that's probably not going to happen with an NH-D14 or H100.

If you want to push your 1090t that far, good luck, 4.2 is average and anything above is very hard to acheive, but yes possible with stability. But you will most likely have to push your vcore to 1.55 wich is max safe voltage to get over 4.2 and in saying that you might as well go with a custom water cooler if you want extreem oc,ing out of that chip.

And you may need even higher voltage than 1.55 wich i would not recomend unless you do not care about the chip at all.

Other wise all the coolers mentioned here would work great for good oc,ing results, even my Antec 620 keeps my sig rig nice and cool at the current speeds and settings. And 62c is the max safe temp on theses chips, but rule of thumb is to keep it at or under 55c, personaly 60c is fine with me.

4.0-4.2 is fine with me as well. I'll go for that once I get my H100 or H80 or NH-D14.
