PC Build for a friend

post #1 of 14
Thread Starter
Howdy there OCN, I'm building a low-low-budget PC for a family friend of mine, and it has to be cheap, yet powerful (doesn't everything these days)

Budget is $325, and it has to have everything but monitor, kb and mouse. I have an OS, and onboard GPU is fine!

Go at it!

Everything including an OS? Unless you/they are a student, that's going to be almost a 1/3rd of the budget, Goodluck getting anything "powerful" with what's left!

No, I have the OS already, and onboard is fine, unless you can fit a GPU in there somewhere.

Challenge accepted. I recommend:

AMD Socket FM1/Llano based PC:
AMD A6 3650/HD 6530D + Gigabyte A75M-S2V - $195 + $3 shipping
2x2GB G.Skill NQ DDR3-1600 - $34 shipped after promo [see link]
Seagate 500GB HDD + Sony 24X DVD - $52.50 shipped both
Pixxo small form factor case and PSU - $28 + $11 shipping [Meritline]
Quad core and AMD Radeon HD 6530D graphics: $323.50 shipped
Tiny but powerful

AMD Socket AM3/Phenom II based PC:
AMD Phenom II x4 925 + Thermaltake 92mm basic cooler - $95 shipped both
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0040JHGD6"]Biostar A880G+[/ame] - $55 shipped [Amazon]
2x2GB G.Skill NQ DDR3-1600 - $34 shipped after promo [see link]
Seagate 500GB HDD + Sony 24X DVD - $52.50 shipped both
Pixxo small form factor case and PSU - $28 + $11 shipping [Meritline]
AMD Phenom II + 880G HD graphics chipset (note that this will have less overall graphics power) - $275.50 shipped

The lower AM3 based PC might be good if you want to use the cash headroom for something such as bigger HDD space. You might also wish to use an AM3+ motherboard, though note that the new AMD FX Series processor will cost at least $200 for the quad core model and may not run well with lower end AM3+ boards. For future expansion/upgradeability, I recommend the AMD APU based build. FM1 will be used for many more future APUs including those based on Bulldozer cores. There's not really much in terms of "up" for socket AM3.

Notice on open box motherboards - they may be missing important items i.e. rear i/o shields and SATA cables you may require. That is why I have recommended motherboards in their retail box with full accessories, rather than a cheap open box board deal.

Dustin1: Your LGA1156 i3 will not run on that LGA1155 board, plus the old 1156 i3s are nominally weaker overall than most AMD quad core setups.

Here's a quick build for you:

Case/psu:
Elite 310 ATX, MATX Mid Tower Case W/Window with 460w Power Supply (Black/Orange)
$55 shipped
Mobo: ASRock 880GM-LE AM3 $45 shipped
CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition $75 shipped
CPU cooler for OEM cpu:
Hyper 212 Plus
$15 (no additional shipping if purchased at same time as case)
Memory: Patriot Viper Xtreme Series, Division 2 Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 cas8 $25 w/ $10 mir
HDD: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Spinpoint-3-5-Inch-Internal-HD103SJ/dp/B002MQC0P8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310850963&sr=8-1"]Samsung F3 1TB[/ame] $55 shipped (no tax)
Pick your favorite $20 optical drive

Total = $290. ($300 before rebates)

Edit: Dang! xd beat me here. Mine is still pretty good as far as performance (you could easily switch out my x3 for the x4 that xd suggested), however the x3 is a black edition and will probably perform the same or better than the 925 as it will be more safely oc'ed via unlocked multi.
