New to audio stuff, need advice (speakers and sound card)

Hi, I'm kind of new to the whole audio scene, and don't really know much about the current hardware on the market. I have been using monitor speakers and onboard audio since my first build, but now I've upgraded, so I want a great improvement in my listening experiences.

I want to find a set of speakers, preferably 2.1 (not surround because of space limitations), as well as a sound card to go along with it.

I will use these speakers for listening to music, playing games, and watching movies (priority in that order)

I listen to a wide variety of music, including alternative rock, hip hop, classical, and electronic stuff, so I would like a speaker set with good bass, and clear mids and highs.

I would like to keep everything under $200 USD if possible. The most I could do is $250, but only if there is a very big increase in quality worth the extra $50

I'm not sure if you guys need any more information to suggest me a set of speakers and a sound card, so just let me know if I'm missing anything. Thanks in advance!

for sound card get the Xonar DX unless you play alot of BC2 then get the X-Fi titanium , the DX performs badly only in this game
Both cards are 70-80$

Or you can get the cheap yet amazing for the price the PCI Xonar DG 30$

Speakers: the klipach promedia 2.1 are amazing and they are 150$

Maybe Klipsch Promedia 2.1 and an asus xonar dx.

You can find the promedias 2.1 for $90 here, it's considered new open box.

+1 for this.

recently bought a xonar sound card and the Kpros as my entry into nicer audio gear and have been very pleased with them.

Newgenoutlet is where I got my Kpros and they were immaculate.

Hey guys thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it! I actually do happen to play a lot of BC2, but I will be switching to BF3 when that comes out. Do you guys think that the Xonar DX will have the same problems with BF3? Also, I really like the aesthetics of the M10 more than the promedias, are there any major differences between the two? Thanks again guys!

Xonar DX and ProMedias will be excellent.

EDIT: AFAIK BF3 is rumored to have a completely new audio engine, and apparently they've addressed owners of the Xonar series. Are you going to play with headphones or speakers? Honestly, with 2.1 speakers, I don't think it's that critical anyways, and I'd still go with the DX. If you want to use headphones, an X-fi Titanium, or preferably a Titanium HD would be better options.

Having heard both, I preferred the M10s. I'm not sure for what price they're going right now; Swan equipment can be tricky to find.

Highly doubt there will be any issues with BF3 tbh.

Also, from what I've heard the Promedias are a bassier set of speakers, but the M10s have less bass and a bit more clarity.
