Gtx 480 SLI placement

Thread Starter
I recently bought a 2nd gtx480 (zotac AMP version) and it's still in the mail. What i'm trying to figuire out is this:

Should I place it above the 1st card and behind the spitfire cooler (relatively warm air blowing on it)
OR
Move the spitfire gpu to the top pci-e slot and then place the zotac bellow it (smaller gap space for air and 1st cards gpu heat coming from the back of it).

I'm thinking of putting the zotac above the 1st card (and behind the spitfire gpu). Even though the air coming into it will be a bit warmer there is still more room than if it would be placed directly under the 2nd card leaving little space (like the thread with the guy with 2x VF3000 570s).

Put the new card on the top as it will pull the hot air out of the system.

Just keep a eye on both temps and try and have a fan pushing cool air onto both cards.

I added another 120mm fan at the top so it will pull air out from the two cards. The one thing I'm worried about is whether the zotac will be able to clear the spitfire. From all the screenshots i've seen I think the apc cooler sticks out 1-2cm from the PCB and that may hit the spitfire.

Im fairly confident it should fit,

Worse case is you will just have to have the zodac in the second slot smile.gif

Yea I think you're right. I took another glance and the amp cooler itself will be near the top of the spitfire. Worst case scenario I can bend the pipes back just a tad.

It seems to me both arrangements are not very good.
If I have to predict, I incline to think arrangement 2 would give a better thermal performance for both cards.

Arrangement 1:- Zotac AMP is in upper slot and behind the Spitfire
Zotac basically exhausts most of its hot air along its top edge (see pic 1). Therefore, in this arrangement, its hot exhausting air will run against the airflow of the Spitfire. No Good #1. Then, warm air from Spitfire will feed into intake fans of Zotac. No Good #2. See pics 2 and 3.

Arrangement 2:-Zotac is in the lower slot with the Spitfire on the upper slot
This mostly avoids the 2 problems mentioned above. Zotac's intake air path still likely runs against its hot exhaust air path. This looks inevitable. See pics 4 and 5.
Another potential problem is that the Spitfire might hit the top of the case. Physical conflict might happen. Needs to check this.

This is how I ended up installing it:
img_4e30b4a40fbc2.jpg

The method with the zotac on the bottom made it have almost 0 gap space and load temps hit 90. With the zotac on top it tops out ingame at 99% gpu usage (on both cards) at 70-71c.

Excellent job.
With all that Thermalright goodness going on, you were able to find the right spot to fit in the Zotac AMP.
If I may ask, what case are you using?
Or, if that's a secret then just tell me to mind my own business:p
So, are your gpu temps., at load, similar for both cards? And how is the temp. spread between the two cards at load?
I ask, because that is really a unique setup, I already have a 480 AMP, and I've always liked Thermalright's coolers.

My spitfire cooler card is actually cooler on load than the zotac (when zotac is at 70-71 its at 64-65c). The spitfire cooler is only using 70% fan speed too (the zotac I use 75-80% fan speed). The cpu case is a cm Stacker T01 (very old case). I swaped the mobo tray to get it upside down like that. Gaming works great. Played some BC2 and crysis 2 and its excellent.

Ah, that's a classic CM Stacker, one of the originals. I had a Stacker a few years ago, but it was the later model 832, black anodized. It was one of the very few full-tower cases I've had, somehow I just couldn't warm up to it, in spite of all its' features.

Swapping the tray upside down as you did has a neat effect of having the cards facing "up" so you see their "better side".

No surprise the Spitfire cooled card runs cooler. Good temps. on both cards regardless, and the temp. spread between the two is quite low.
