GPU possibly overheating?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, recently my computer has been crashing over and over and I'm suspecting it's a combination of the heat (live in Toronto) and a bad graphic card. I noticed it's been crashing only when I play in the afternoon on a really hot day.

I'm using the Zotac Nvidia GTZ460 and it's currently idling at 60c. The CPU is idling at 50c and if I try to play something moderately intense like TF2, it jumps to 99c+.
You guys have any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks.

Welcome to ocn

Try changing the thermal paste on both the gpu/cpu, (aslong as it doesn't void the gpu warranty and you know how to do it)

Also have you got any fans pushing air around the case onto the cpu and onto the gpu?

Thanks for the quick response. I continued monitoring it through out the day and it's currently idling at 67c rather than 60c in my above post.

I don't know how to change the thermal paste but it's something I'm willing to learn (but I'm pretty sure it will void the warranty.

I only have one single back fan pushing air around the GPU. I recently gutted my PC and and got new parts (everything new except new case basically), so the ventilation might be a bit bad.

I want to add that the PC is resting on carpet (as my room is all carpeted). Do you guys suggest I get a piece of plank wood and use that to rest my PC on it to keep it a bit cooler?

The problem seem to me from the case Sir. it must have a very poor/really bad airflow.
And current hardware to be in a good working condition must have at least good ambient & good air flow case. unlike the Pentium 4 days.
Your ambient is not that bad.
So keep the side panel opened and see how it goes?

reapplying thermal paste to a CPU will not void any warranty. GPU might, i am not sure.

but i am sure that those temps are dang high.

reapply all thermal paste (if you can. the search button will answer all your questions about applying thermal paste.) and add fans. if your fan slots are full, get faster fans. and/or cut fan holes in the side of the case.

if your heatsink is stock, a fan hole and a duct making it blow straight on your CPU would be great. for the GPU, from what i find from a quick google search, it exhausts out the back. so you can drill a hole and add a fan blowing right on the area where the intake is (which is the fan built into the card's housing.)

you can also add a fan to the bottom and have a duct going up close to the intake on the card. and you can add a duct to the fan on the front of your case (if you have one) so that it directs air more directly to the GPU.

good luck

oh, and 120mm fan stencils can be bought from MNPCTech and they are super useful for positioning screw holes. but you can also use a fan grill. 120mm fans are something like a 4.5 inch hole saw if you can use one, or you can use a dremel. but dont forget to deburr either way, using a round or half-round metal file.

Yea, that is my case. Everything in my PC is new except the case. I've been wanting to get a new case for awhile but do you guys think it is the case that is bad or is the GPU faulty?
