It improves memory bandwidth and latency. You should try running it at 2800 and 1.3 to 1.35v using CPU/NB voltage, not the actual NB voltage.

Gigabyte might call it CPU VID

Probably not. Try it though and see. It may on some games.

Some people increase the wrong voltage in the bios. The CPU NB or what is known as the CPU's memory controller is what you overclock and not the NB on the motherboard chipset.

You get a substantial increase in performance by overclocking the CPU NB, both in games and snappiness windows. Very worth it.

It really does nothing for gaming, its just for enthusiast overclockers who enjoy getting as large numbers as possible. But from a practical point of view its just a risk not worth taking.
Give it a shot buddy. Measure your FPS in games and see what the before and after result is. I was on my phone just trying to do short answers while watching a movie with the kids.

My gflops increased by 8-12 when I overclocked it and my memory. That results in more processing power which can help games.

Beyond games, big improvements on multi-tasking! Overclocking the memory controller on your cpu and pushing more voltage through it does make it run hotter, so watch your temps.

15 fps increase in crysis 2 going from 2600 to 3100mhz says otherwise. The NB is on the CPU, if you keep your CPU below 55c (62c max)and around CPU-nb 1.35-1.4v you will not harm the CPU. It's a trade off for CPU speed or IMC speed. Find the sweet spot.
