Does take much to max out WoW and Portal 2. You would spend a third of what your going to spend (Self built) to max out with 60+fps on those games.

Build one yourself, then use the rest of the 1k-2k you have to get a nice sound system and monitor along with it or other extra's you want.

You could also order at ncixus.com or ncix.com if you're in canada, they will assemble it for 50$ and they have a tons of pre-configured computers that you can change like an alienware but the price and quality is MUCH better.

If you can put together a Lego set successfully you can also build a PC.

The alienware is a royal rip-off.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/305?vs=316

The blue bar is one GTX 580.
The black bar is one GTS 450 (Alienware)

If you custom built you could have at least two GTX 580 for the same money so doubling the blue bar.

It's not like a small rip-off, it's 6x more expensive than it should be essentially.

You could actually order all of the parts next day air, pay someone local to build it for you, and still come out at least $1000 cheaper. My advice would be to check out Newegg and Microcenter. BTW, I own an Alienware laptop, but I would never dream of buying one of their incredibly overpriced desktops.
well this system is right under budget and blows the alienware out of the water

Trust me, telling your friends that you built your own computer is much more impressive than buying an alienware, especially when whatever you make crushes it, for less cost.

And besides building your own computer is just plain fun. Good luck in your search for your perfect build! And be sure to come back with any questions you might have!
Never buy Alienware or any Pre-made computer for the record. Building your own is much better and a lot cheaper too.
GTX is more popular, but who cares how popular something is if the performance sucks. You wouldn't follow a idiot just because he was popular would you? Maybe you would, I have no idea.
