Problem booting into dos

Thread Starter
I followed this guide for flashing a gtx 465

http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/7522...65-gtx470.html

All I get is "please change your boot device to proper one" Once, I enable my ssd it boots into windows just fine.

No command prompt
No dos
No nvflash

Are you using a flash drive? I did not read the tutorial, but I have seen this error when flashing my 460 SE. I think it has to do with going into the bios and finding your usb drive and making it boot. It should not be the same screen as your boot order (removable drive did not work for me) You should be able to see it in the hard drive priority list, and you may have to replace your storage drive(s) with the usb flash drive, and then make it boot first in the order.

"Pure Dos" was removed in Windows starting with XP. You can get to a command prompt in Windows, but, older programs want pure dos.

Use the program's capable of flashing from Windows.

He is talking about Boot from DOS, which you need to setup a DOS system for a USB flash drive.

Actually, if OP still wants to do that, my GTX 590 flashing guide also has the instructions for that too.

That's true, but, he could simply use better software capable of flashing from Windows.

Edit - I know doing that scares some people though.

What version of nvflash? I think I tried that on my 460 SE and it would not flash it. It could read and save it though. I may have missed a step.

Either you're not properly setting the boot order so that it boots from your stick, or the stick wasn't made correctly to be bootable.

I always use the HP Bootable USB tool to format the stick, using a dos image from Windows ME (which I've gotten from Bootdisk.com).

Apparently people have good luck flashing their vga bios from nvflash for Windows, personally I don't like to do that, but to each their own. If I was going to flash from Windows I would uninstall drivers, and do the flash from Safe Mode, because the drivers can trip out if they suddenly have a 470 installed where seconds earlier they had a 465. In fact, even if you flash from DOS I'd uninstall drivers before you shut down to do the flash.

Good luck in any case ... assuming the process works in entirety (i.e you get the extra cuda cores, memory bus width, and memory amount), flashing the 465 to 470 provides a rather impressive performance boost, on the order of 25%. When you consider that your average 470 is capable of OC'ing to the point of an extra 25% perf improvement on top of that ... your (I would imagine fairly cheap, yes?) 465 should be performing comparably to a 570/480 here pretty soon

There's no better deal in the gfx card world going on these days than landing yourself an unlockable 465 for < $150.

All I had to do was hit F8, before I was just changing the boot order in the bios.

Unlocked like a charm
