[help]encoding not utilizing my CPUs

to make things clear, im not trying to encode without my CPU to make room for other things

its more like the encoding program I use(AVS video converter) isn't using my CPU and therefore going slow

its my first trial on this, its a ~300MB file i assume, firstly it goes like 300Kb/s which i was very satisfied with.

However, when it got to ~80%, it started to move by 0.02% every time and that annoys me. the original estimated finish time was less than 5mins, now its going to spend 15 more mins on it.

turned on desktop gadget and core temp, both are showing me close to none CPU usage. (didn't check for CPU usage when speed was going good)

EDIT: now that ive waited through the first file and started the 2nd, ive noticed even when its going fast, the highest CPU usage i can see is 25%, shoot man Dragon Age: Origins can use more CPU than that...

also, the encoding goes slow AGAIN after 84%, the exact same mark i notice it last time.

is there something wrong in settings? have you guys seen this before? is there a way i can sequeeze more CPU juice out of that? or maybe its the converter being the limiting factor?

Or are there any alternatives? can anyone suggest me a good video converter with video editing function that can be faster/use more of my cores? I only edit and convert various different common video files (like AVI, MPEG, MP4, RMVB, VOB) all into AVI

sorry for the late reply, didnt have much time to try converting again

well, i think ive kind of found the source of the problem, its probably my harddisk/external harddisk

ive been converting videos on ext HDD and saving them back onto the ext HDD. It might have been something about the coding of the converting program using the HDD when is slowing the whole process down.

Im saying this because i tried transferring a large file on the ext HDD onto the desktop's HDD and the conversion literally stopped for the course of transferring.

what you think? could that be the problem? its not like i can solve the problem anyway, i heard SSDs aren't good at transferring large files?
