What's the main difference between HD 6870 and HD 6950

Thread Starter
How much there is difference in performance and can HD 6870 run almost all modern games with maxed settings ?
I'm not sure on the exact difference - I believe there is quite a bit of increase, however I have 2 6870's and they max everything I've thrown at them without issues. One is probably enough, I only have two because I bought secondhand

Look, HD 6950 >> HD 6870. The 6950 is maybe 20% faster or so. Now, depending on your monitor resolution. The 6870 might be able to max-out some games if it is 1280x1024. Although having a bigger one 23" or 24" won't do the job. Those have resolutions of 1920x1080 or so. A HD 6950 could probably be close to maxing out, but still missing a bit. (Nothing big tho). I would go with the HD 6950 2GB if you have the money, or even the 1GB, they got dirty cheap the pass weeks compared to the 570 or 560. And the HD 6950 does beat the 560.

6870 can't max out more than 1280x1024?

A friend I know has an overclocked 6870 and I have a stock 5870. He beats my score at heaven 2.5 by like 10% at the same settings and res (1280x1024, that's the highest his screen can go)

Yet, my 5870 is perfect for my resolution of 2048x1536. There's absolutely no need for anything higher IMO. I pretty much max out any game aside from crysis/metro/witcher 2.

UH the 570 tends to easily beat the 6950. The 6870 can MAX most games at 1920x1080...
Also screen size DOESN'T matter a 1080 24" and a 1080 19" will require the same amount of "power".

I'm on 1680x1050 w/ 5870 and I still feel like I need more fps.

Keep in mind that A: resolution isn't everything, B: I never use AA.

the 6870 would probably do pretty well at 1080p with close to max settings, I'd get that and if it struggles with future titles just add another. They are very nice cards for their price. in 1080p there will only be higher fps but nothing noticeable.

If you can afford the extra for the 6950, I'd go for that.

I've gone for the ASUS 1GB 6950 (dual fans) and it's a pretty seriously overclockable card.

At stock speed it's a real monster but get it to 950+ Mhz on the core and you're looking at a card that beasts the GTX 570 for £100 less!

At that resolution, you'll be CPU limited, not GPU on a 5870.
