yea, you have the speed in either network it is just bridging the two that makes it slow, i usually use it within my college's network, it is quite nice being able to play crysis on your netbook from class lol

EDIT: but my room mate hated it when i leave my speakers on when i do it lol

I wouldn't use FTP simply based on transferring your files and authentication information in clear text.

As mentioned previously, SSH would be a better solution. From which you can use WinSCP for a graphical interface, similar to an FTP client, and maintain security of your transmissions as they will be encrypted.
