This is the harsh reality of silicon, they're not all cut from the same wafer.

yeah suffice it to say I'm done with ATI for a while...I mean i mostly go with what gives me best performance for price but next time i will be going Nvidia. especially with DX 11

And a good many of them probably have the voltage higher with water cooling as well, also a lot of people brag and exaggerate their overclocking prow-ess

Actually let me take back the OC, its 1100 I can hit mem wise. Last time i ran 820 1200, i think it BSOD. yes that was what made me want to turn it back in...although I don't know for the extra 30mhz core and 100mhz mem if its worth it. Its not much performance boost and the heat/noise gets bad.

What i had wanted was a card that can be Oc'd to higher clocks like 900mhz and when i needed to leave it at such high an OC, I would buy a better cooler.

well your mobo certainly has room...why don't you sell the 5970 and get a couple 6970's or something?

last year. I had been gaming on 850mhz and 1200mhz after furmark ran successfully for a lot of tests and playing through Crysis 1 and warhead w/o any crashes/ artifacts.

What made me suspicious was when I would try to run GTA IV EFLC and i would get artifacts...which suprised me. then i used GPU tool and got artifacts from that OC and then lowered it down till 820mhz 1100 mhz where it has been stable. (i need to do longer tests to make sure)

Furmark was the only thing i knew back then and it failed me...possibly led to more instability at higher clocks

I guess i could I am hesitant 1. because I will not be gaming much after the summer break, 2. being actually able to sell it at a decent price on EBAY, 3. 6970 xfire is more expensive than I want to pay for, 4. for the most part it runs games well except SC2 and Crysis 2 DX 11/ any DX 11 games.

You know, that game is bugged like hell right? If your card was damaged, it'd show the artifacts everywhere. Also, if it was damaged, it'd be by your doing no? I'd try patching the game and driver updates first.

The issue is Vram.

The 5970 has 2gb, but it is shared. it is a 1GB card.

1GB of VRAM isn't enough for crysis 2 high texture DX11.

Overclocking won't help.
