what i heard were underclocked 5870s. I also believe what makes the 2x5870 even truer is that the 5970 chips have the same amount of shader units

just because they are underclocked 5870's doesnt mean you will get 5870 speeds. the reason they are downclocked is due to heat output and voltage needs. reviewers said that their samples got 5870 speeds. doesnt mean yours will. processor manufacturing is a very unrefined process. these things are only guaranteed for the speeds they are sold it. i doubt the place you bought from we let you return it if you said "it wont overclock". also, where did you see it ADVERTISED as to underclocked 5870s and that is guaranteed they will overclock? if you're talking about reviews, thats not advertising.

Exactly this.

They ARE 5870 cores but they are clocked to 5850 SPEEDS because of aforementioned causes, heat and voltage, and probably power draw as well.

Same goes for CPUs. Just because a review site says an i7 will hit 5GHz doesn't mean that every chip manufactured under the same moniker will do the same.

It's called the silicon lottery as someone else has said in this thread. You can't expect someone's past successes to signify how well your chip will do.

The speed you buy a card at is the ONLY speed a manufacturer will warrant.

Just like if I got my GTX 580 and it would only do 1MHz faster than stock while maintaining stability I can't complain and return it, it's just the luck of the draw. Sure I'd be super P/O'd but there's simply nothing that can be done about it.

820 and 1200mhz is quite respectable especially if that was without voltage adjustment

I'm sorry but do either of you read the specs about the card before commenting? There clearly two 5870 cores at 5850 speeds I thought I was done saying this a month after this card came out, guess not...

Also your card is fine, nothing is guaranteed by the manufacture but stock clocks, just cause other people hit 850/1200 doesn't mean anything. Same goes with my card I can hit 920/1225 on 1.137v and I only know of one other 5970 on here that's hit that exact speed with those volts, and there used to be a lot 5970's on here. But like someone has said before your framrate issue isn't your GPU itself its just the amount of vRAM it has 1GB of vRAM isnt enough to run Crysis 2 DX11 Maxed Textures.

How much money would I pay ebay?
impossible... 400 at the most...

when I had my 5970 I bumped the voltage to get to 1000/1300

I couldnt do much on stock voltages...

It's not guaranteed..

As far as I know, a 5970 is two 5870's at 5850 speeds. Nobody ever guaranteed any sort of OC, as is the case with 95% of cards. Each card is made to run at stock, nothing after that is guaranteed, or even implied.

My 5970 maxes every game (well, apart from Metro and the like) at 2560 x 1440, so I don't even see why you'd need to overclock it. Especially with one 1080p monitor, which is a waste on a 5970 anyhow.
