How much is too much? - Page 3

Well the point with the 1200 watt people usually use is that if they can spend 1500 dollars on overkill cards they probably don't mind spen ding 300 dollars on overkill PSU. I mean what do you need 3-way 580 for? But you should get at least 1000. As a 580 on full load is using around 300 watt, so with a powerfull CPU and other stuff, it will quickly hit the 1000 watt. 1200 if you want to overclock CPU or GPUs.

Thanks for that , everyone else has summed that up basically to for me thanks for more confirmation. and already said probably not doing 580's im just curious as to what i would need if the future enthusiast cards are around same pwr consumption for performance as the 580 or close. I needed a meter in my head on that , all you guys helped me so thanks.

No Problem . You can check Phaedrus's psu calculator in the psu section . It's a sticky , along with other usefull information .

There's no way I would do a Tri SLI 580 build on a 850w psu. It would boot up, but you wouldn't be able to oc at all, and it would probably crash when it hit full load.

850w would be pushing it a little for three 580's. 900-950w is fine, though. Perhaps 1000w if you're planning on vmodding/heavily OCing the cards and keeping the rig under full load often.

yup Sounds Accurate. I like the Pricing on the New Corsair HX 1050W like $220. I mean the AX 850 is like $170-190. but you get what you pay for. thanks all once again

You won't need more than 1000W for Tri 580s. 850W you might just about get away with, doubt it though.

PSU power is definitely overrated though, especially with marketing etc.

I had a 4870X2 running great on a 500W Antec!

if you want to go 1000w that would work perfectly fine

I don't see 3x 580's on 850W. I read a review where they had 2x 580's and they were pulling just over 700W from the wall under stress using kill-a-watt to measure. Then you have to factor in other things like PSU efficiency. I'd say that a high quality 850W would choke under stress for 3x 580's.
