Will the HX650 suffice?

Thread Starter
I have an HD6950 2GIG, and am planning on another just before BF3 release. Will the HX650 suffice for 2 HD6950s in CrossfireX?

I should have got the 850w...

Just leave the power cap alone for the HD 6950s and you'll be plenty fine, even in prime95 + FurMark and with the CPU overclocked.

The power cap?

Would that be leaving the cards at standard speeds/voltages?

Well, leaving standard speeds/voltages should be sufficient by itself.

I was referring to a feature of the HD 6950 / 6970. I think they have some kind of power control setting:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4061/a...deon-hd-6950/9

I mean to leave it at 0%. My understanding is that these cards estimate their current power consumption and throttle down a bit if they are consuming power over the given limit. However, at the default 0% and stock clocks, they will rarely reach the limit in most games--it just prevents FurMark and such from burning them up. For an HD 6950, the nominal limit is 200W; it's 250W for the HD 6970.

This way you can be sure the HD 6950s will take no more than about 200W each. With the rest of your system, this gives you enough leeway on a HX650 to overclock your Phenom II X4 to whatever and barely fit in around or a little under 650W. Of course, the HX650 can do a little over 650W if necessary--it's just not good for any long-term use to be hitting loads that high.

And keep in mind that you'll generally never pull as much power as everything is capable of in the worst case scenario, unless you intentionally try to create the worst-case scenario by running something like prime95 and FurMark simultaneously. In a game you should be fine, and that should be a reasonable load for a HX650. It's got a 7 year warranty anyway, right?

says 164 in a 3dgame. granted its not a stress test, but the gtx 560ti didnt change much between the 3dgame and the synthetic test so i assume the 6950 wont either lol

650 seems plenty

If you just game it should be fine. If you try to increase the vcore on the hd6950 and run furmark then that could be a problem.

Awesome

Thanks guys. Am planning to try get 4GHz out of this PhenomII, but was always going to leave the cards stock. Never got into overclocking GPUs.
