8gb microsd card diminishing space to 5gb

Ok Thought I would post here as there is no customer service on the sandisk forums at all.

Bought a sandisk 8gb micro sd card for use in a car camera, when I got it I put it in the camera and then connected that to the pc, found stroage and installed as usb storage device, great so go check it out, says 7.4gb free space, thats ok I thought and what it should be.

Anyway format the drive using windows format utility using quick format it then says after completion that it is now 7gb, chumped again this cant be right so now reformat using the full option and after completion it went down a bit more to 6, now it's sitting at 5.4gb, what the hell?. I even tired using sd formatter but still no luck same results.

Ive double checked the ebay seller's auction site and they definatly have 99% feedback and no negatives in regards to fakes and they have a lot of feedback and sell a lot of cards.

I have opend a ebay case on it , but just seeing if theres anything else I can do myself?

Do you think this card is faulty or a fake?. if fake it wouldnt make sense as surely it would fall to under 4gb if it was that in disguise?, ive had no errors loading files onto it and at the start when I had just formatted it I ran h2testw on it and that loaded about 7.2gb of files onto it fine.

I am really confused as to why this has happend?.

Any help guys? thankyou.

Well,

That is odd, i'd try a few things

1. check it in a different device
2. Set it to read only and try to write to it
3 download http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3 and see what that comes back with

Also, what file system are you formatting with?

Thanks for the help.

I have only this car cam at the moment to test the card, I have no adapter. I connected the camera to my laptop and that too popped up as a storage device and shows the capacity as 5.4gb also.

I even tried full formatting it there and still sits at 5.4gb.

I am formatting using fat32 and default allocation size in windows and tried sd formatter with both the options there and no change.

I dont know how to set it the read only sorry.

I thought there was a switch on the memory card, obviously not.

If that's the case, i'd try an NTFS file system. It shouldn't make a difference but it's worth a shot.

Otherwise, i'd go through ebay and then through Paypal if you don't get any help from him.

This always happens with windows format..... it eats away at your space. I fixed my pendrive with a mac (8gb to 24mb)
Try this:
Open CMD as administrator
type diskpart and press enter
type lis vol ->enter
YOu should be able to see the partition on the SD card with the missing space.

Tell me what it looks like.

Even with your file system allocation, i'd expect you to be sitting at around 7.5Gb or soemthing.

Without another device to test this on, we don't know if its the device you're using or the card.

An easier way than the above is diskmgmt.msc in your run button and check it in there.

Yes I will need a card reader to rule out any space taken from the car cam, but I dought it as read reviews where they see all the space.

Heres a screenshot of discpart, still shows 5.6gb

Go check your diskmgmt.msc and see if you have unallocated data on your SD card.
