Even 480 hold their own http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/298?vs=310 with being able to get 480s for dirt cheap around 225 or so idk

I went with 6990/6970 over 580 SLI, and I'm glad I did too, the performance is absolutely insane, I have no problem averaging over 120fps in all the games I play. everything is liquid smooth.

I have had zero issues with drivers and AMD drivers are getting better and better each release. Scaling is also great providing the game supports multi GPU setup. I'm sure both sides have their issues with games, you read about it all the time...

If your 1080p and not 120hz, a single 6970 2GB or a single 580 1.5GB will be all you need.

My SLI 580's come very close to Tri-fire 6970's in most of the benches in the benchmarking section. Plus, I only have two PCI-E slots to work with so the choice was easy....
I would believe that GTX 580s are just a little bit lower in performance because your trying to compare two cards to three, yet they both still come close, so then just think about three 580s. That would not be needed of course but still if the two 580s come close in that wouldn't it be fair to say that it would be better if you went with the 580s? I do not troll Nvidia cards and personally have no opinion on which is better I am just restating some facts.

1*6990 or 1*GTX 590 FTW....
Watercooling seems a bit better but if I owned a 6990 I would definitely get an aftermarket cooler.
