OC'd 6950 @ 90°C under load...

Thread Starter
I'm running a Sapphire HD 6950 2GB (ref) with unlocked shaders via modded bios, OC'd to 880/1375 @1.175V

My idle temp run 42~45°C
I ran OCCT GPU Test for an hour and my temp under load came out to be ~90°C

Would my system benefit significantly from an aftermarket cooler, if so does anyone have suggestions?

Added note: I'm new to all this (first computer I've ever built, never installed an A-M cooler, etc.)

Thanks!

What fan profile are you running. If its CCC auto, then that's your problem.
Im OCed to 900\\1400 and i just put my fan on 51% and it doesnt go over 60c.
But msi afterburn has a nice fan control if you dont want it screeming all the time.

That's very hot - none of my flashed 6950s run above 74°C under 24/7 load.

First I'd check ventilation in your case, perhaps position some fans so they blow onto your card.

If ventilation is fine and you have some thermal paste lying around, then try removing the HSF and reapplying it (sometimes most of the time manufacturers do a poor job of applying it).

Having said that, there's a lot of misinformation surrounding safe temperatures of graphics cards. In reality, 90°C is fine, and these chips only start to reach their thermal limit at 100°C, but for heavy usage I'd always recommend trying to stay below 80°C.

The airflow in my case isnt ideal, and theres only 1 slot where this giant card fits, which is right above the PS, so that may be an issue, but there isn't much I can do about it, save getting a new case and/or motherboard. (Loose cabling isnt an issue, I have it ziptied and tucked away).

Hm I suppose I can try re applying the thermal paste. Hopefully that process isnt too difficult.

Thanks for the tips.

Gonna try Afterburner too...but will it be any good considering I don't have an MSI card??
