Water Cooling Justification

Thread Starter
New member with a newb question.

I've got a new build on the cards, Z68, 8gb ram, 2600k, undecided on graphics for now, looking at around two grand, maybe more, with a dual radiator water-cooling setup in the CM 690 ii.

The thing is, the water-cooling setup will cost approx 450, including gpu/ cpu blocks etc.

Is this cost justified, or do I spend the money on better components? I'm thinking better graphics card(s)/ surround/ 3d surround. I don't think water-cooling will really enable me to get almost half a grands worth extra out of my overclocking, compared to what that money could buy in stock components?

My original reasoning for water cooling was just the noise as the build will be two metres from where I intend to occasionally watch movies on it from, but the build will require fans too, and I could always choose more silent versions for an air cooled build. Kind of need a sounding board for the idea, and in the likely case you agree the money would be better spent on components, I guess I'm totally unsure as to which ones?

Regards, Danny

Hi and welcome to OCN!

In your case, I'd go with air cooling + silent fans + fan controller. WHen you watch movies, just lower the RPM and you're done

If I were you at this time I would start out with just water cooling the CPU and then later on you can upgrade/add to your water cooling.Maybe start with something like this:

The Rasa WC kits don't cost that much.
The XSPC Rasa 450 RS120 Universal CPU Water Cooling Kit is $129 Aus
Step up from that is the
XSPC Rasa 750 RS360 Universal CPU Water Cooling Kit @ $149 Or the
XSPC Rasa 750 RX360 Universal CPU Water Cooling Kit @ $159.
Mind you this is AUD prices i pay so USA is cheaper.

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=16535

^^ Thats the RS120 and what it looks like, when fans on low rpm its silent. ( i first used that with the X20 750 res / pump)
But like the other dude said, Silent air cooling is good if you are not looking at major overclocking.

Thanks for the rapid input guys! It seems to be unthinkable to get the k version and not overclock it at all, and I'd budgeted in this fan controller.

As regards the leftover spending money, I can't make my mind up between:

3d-surround/ sli gtx 570/480
single monitor gtx580/6990
variations of the above

All input and ideas welcomed. I do like the idea of being able to add a second gtx580 down the line/ the extra monitors if I choose to. I've never tried the 3x monitor surround or the new 3d tech so I guess opinions is what I'm after!

unless your looking at overclocking everything to the max, then spend the money on a couple of good gfx cards so you can play games at ultra high, get a case with good air flow that can be watercooled in the future if you choose. As mentioned the rasa kits are value for money if you decided in the future to go water, also if you wanted to go water you would need something like an RX360 + RX240 to cool 2 gpu's + cpu and be able to overclock
