Please Help - Applications cannot use Internet

Hey,

I know exactly what has caused this I just need help to fix it :S.

I basically broke every rule in the book, and for that I am ashamed of myself. I downloaded this spyware called Megakey that says it replaces adverts you usually see with theirs to get you free premium access to their websites.

First of all, it didn't even work. Then it caused a conflict with the iTunes Mobile Service. So I got rid of it, and then created a barrage of swear words as my computer rebooted...

Avast tells me it can't protect me from E-Mail
Steam can't connect
Internet Explorer doesn't load any pages
Firefox doesn't load any pages

Thing I have tried:
Resetting everything in Internet Explorer (no change)
Looking for proxies in Firefox and IE (there were none)
Looking for all traces of Megakey (couldn't seem to fine any, though I did not use any tools to do this)
Using WinSockFix (didn't work & gave me two errors, about the registry and the program could not be found)

The internet CONNECTION works fine. It's just that none of my programs can use it due to an obscure setting or something that, because Megakey is gone, messes up.

Please help,
Sheza

An update - re-installing MegaKey fixes the problem (although obviously I do NOT want it on my PC!)

So basically you have no internet when you remove it?
What happens if you open up a command prompt and type ping www.google.com ?

Have you tried to restore to an earlier date with windows restore utility?
Have you tried installing mozilla firefox?
Reinstalling your Wireless/LAN drivers?
Reinstalling Avast?

I have fixed the problem. I saw that iTunes relied on the TCP/IP Driver and I figured Megakey used this as well. A thought crossed my mind that when un-installing Megakey, it forgot/failed to reset something with regards to this. Therefore I researched how to reset it, un-installed Megakey and then BEFORE rebooting I reset TCP/IP Driver and Winsock. It worked. iTunes works fine too.

Quote:
Type netsh int ip reset c:\
esetlog.txt in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key. Do not restart computer.
Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.
Restart the computer.
I will answer your questions anyway, since you asked.

This works. The ping comes back as normal.

I disabled Windows restore because I have an SSD.
I tried multiple browsers, none worked. (Chrome, even some obscure ones like QTWeb)
Avast was not the problem, so I didn't touch it.

Just a few ideas I had.

Glad you got it working right though.
