Why are the temps so high?

Thread Starter
I have a 2600k 5ghz, 1.51v. Ram is default, speed step/turbo is off. I have 2 360rads, 1 swiftech pump, 1 6990 water block, and a CPU block, temps under prime 95 are fine on core 0,3, but on core 1.2 they hang in the 83C range after a few minutes, but isn't that high at first. Is this normal?

Those are very high temps. Personally I never let my CPU's see above 70-75C. But it is normal for a core or two to run hotter than the rest.

That is not normal. You frying chip with those temps and volts. Before someone starts telling you to check your water cooling. What your your bios settings? Let's start with that, and then if that doesn't work, then other things can be checked. I'm not under water, so others will have to help with that.

You're putting too much voltage to it. Try to be a bit less ambitious and strive for modest OC with longevity instead of a blazing hot short lived streak across the desk.

Also why have turbo on if you're OCing to 5ghz?

5 ghz is not a realistic day to day oc. Right my oc for day to day is 4.5 ghz, I dropped because it's summer. My temps at full load for my cpu, with folding on my gpu, and cpu never go above 65c. That is with no ac. Disable the turbo. Drop you oc down. Use this as a guide for help with your oc, http://www.overclock.net/intel-gener...uide-p67a.html

I have a 2600k 5ghz, 1.51v

Depending on how long you have been running at that voltage and temperature, your CPU may have already degraded.

Personally I wouldn't push my chip past 1.35v.

I can't say whether or not those temps are higher than they should be with your setup, but they are too high for my taste. You do have a 6990 in the loop, but I would go to the water cooling section and see if you can do anything to improve the temps.

I let mine go up to 88c no problem. But that's just me.
As long as I keep it under 95c so it won't throttle down.
I try to keep it under 90c (the spike, not constant 90c...).
But again that is just me and I'm happy my chip will last an year or so.
I've been doing stress tests almost everyday for an month or so.
I've been trying 4.8-5.0 range but I see no degradation whatsoever.
(24/7 = 4.6 @ 1.315v 1866 RAM) Always stable when I put my 24/7 clock setting back.
Well see... I might keep doing this till I see the degradation.
