Really can't decide which one to get...

So please post arguments why I should and why I shouldn't get D3100 or EOS 550D/T2i

Both are excellent DSLRs. Truthfully I don't see a clear reason why you should get one over the other as a beginner DSLR. Both have similar features, excellent IQ, video, etc. Even more, neither body has a clear advantage in IQ over the other, and any discrepancies with these bodies I'd attribute to user skill over camera ability.

The D3100 does have the drawback of lacking an in-body autofocus motor, so you can only autofocus with Nikon's AF-S lenses (their AF lenses can only be used on manual focus). That said, unless you've legacy glass, chances are this won't be a big deal as most of Nikon's current lenses are AF-S.

Honestly the best thing you can do is go to your local electronics store and hold both cameras in your hand. The D3100 and 550D have a distinct difference in ergonomics, and that's likely what you're going to notice the most. After that, simply choose the camera you feel is more comfortable to hold.

Re basically nailed it. If you dont have experience in shooting either, and you dont already own glass, it comes down to which feels better in your hand(s), and which you believe you can control easier. I know people that swear by Canon's ergonomics and have paid more for lower quality bodies than Nikon equivalents just because it was what they were used to, and there will be just about as many people who swear by Nikon's ergonomics.

Between the two, it literally pretty much comes down to user preference.
