Is it safe to overclock my GeForce GTX460? - Page 5

Thread Starter
So now i tried to max the voltage and increase it to 850Mhz.

OCCT showed no errors when i ran it for 15 minutes.

FPS in cod4 seemed to be pretty stable, still some minor 10 fps drops.

But temperatures rose over 60 even on cod4, with stock cooling, so didn't feel like keeping it that high.

So to sum it up: If i keep the voltage at standard and overclock it to max, it's not stable. And if i max the voltage, it has to be overclocked high enough so i don't get fps drops in-game, but that means a huge rise in temperature. Definetly too high for my system.

So i've decided to keep the GPU stock for now. If i need to overclock i'll do that, but not after i get better cooling.
Sorry for all your trouble helping me, only to find out i didn't want to overclock after all. But i really appreciate your support. Atleast now i know how to overclock <3

Temps over 60 is not a big deal.

I keep my card at around 70C on load and its totally fine for me.

Yes but cod4 isn't a heavy game, before the OC i had 50 - 55 degrees, now its 10 degrees higher, so crysis 2 would run at 70 - 75.

Since i have stock cooling i just dont feel safe, and my fans go at 80% which makes noise.

yeah, your temps shouldnt be that high, the OC on my old 460 was 840/1680 and it never broke 70-72 on OCCT....gaming was super cool, dont know exact temps but i would say that 60-62 was prob the highest it hit.

how is your case airflow?
maybe the card isnt breathing well enough....what are the idle temps?

Dude 60c is crazy low for a gpu don't worry about that a bit. Most people here wish their gpus would be around 60 under load.

All 3 of the 460's I had could do 900 on the core. Yours has good cooling don't worry about it.

As far as call of duty I think you should be able to lock onto 60fps with that card. What fps are you getting in game? Are you saying its dropping from like 90-80? Or dipping way low like below 40? FPS will always fluctuate in game, especially with vsync off.

1. Should i run the stress test for an hour to fully check for errors?

2. I want to overclock the memory too, i know how to but do i test it with GPU OCCT or GPU Memtest?

Sorry if bad english.
The best stability test is to play a game, that what gpu's are for. As for memory, don't bother, you won't get much performance out of overclocking it. Just instability and heat.

Idle temps are 28 - 31 depending on room temperature.

The problem is that it didn't drop before the OC, after the OC it started dropping from 125 to as low as 40.

But now i found out it's not the OC, it drops on standard clocks too.
