Funny stuff with the driver...

My Mini311 netbook with Nvidia Ion detects 5.1 in windows and does it over hdmi flawlessly, just tested. It isn't the TV, Receiver, Video clip, Cables or any of that.. but it definitely is AMD + Drivers and some weird things going on in the audio controller.

You can't send high bit rate audio through optical either. There is just physically not enough bandwidth to support it. Any TrueHD or DTS-MA formats will be reduced to 2 channels.

Without additional hdmi-in ports on your receiver, you won't be able to get what you want without some compromises. What is the model of the home theater system you have?

Actually, there is more than enough bandwidth...toslink supports up to 125Mbps. Unfortunately they'll never let Dolby TrueHD/DTS HD-MA go over it because there isn't any kind of copy protection like there is with hdmi (hdcp).

Guess I bought straight into their marketing.

Although I am glad that I only need one cable

Check out my System so you know I know what I'm talking about.

Don't enable the pc audio on you T.V's Settings

I only have one Optical Imput on my receiver, I connect my tv optical to my reciever optical. I plug my Playstation to my T.V. via HDMI. I plug my PC to my T.V. via HDMI. Before I found my HDMI cable I plugged in in via a 8" Mono plug and theres is a huge difference in quality which goes without saying.

I get audio on all my speakers the same as I get on my t.v. 5.1 audio.

I dont think there is anything you have to change as far as software, just dont eneable pc audio on your t.v. settings.

Seems like you looking for something to display that your getting 5.1 audio

That is probably not true surround your sending over. It's taking the "mono" audio and pushing it to all your speakers, unlike what you get with DD where the rear speakers output a different sound, etc...

My last option if I can't do it over HDMI is to use a 20' optical cable from the pc -> optical splitter -> receiver. and another optical cable (monster) from the tv -> optical splitter -> receiver.

i think vga's hdmi bypass/passtrough the audio signal from pc rite ?

guess u need soundcard that can decode to dts/dts neo/dolby digital things...
so all ur pc signal = dd/dts = multichanel to ur avr....(this why i think some soundcard offer this feature, mid-hiend soundcard...)
cmiiw on this...

'cause maybe now depend on source type that u played from ur pc...stereo / songs, =2ch...

Naw its surround. Like if there are footsteps in the distance...you can hear them in a distant sound on te rear speakers differing from the front speakers. I been surrounding for like 5 years so I know just what your talking about.

That why I'm confused why your going through so much trouble. For me it was just plug and go.

Okay so if i get a $3 - 3.5mm Stereo Audio cable (20 feet) and plug it in from my pc -> tv ... -> monster optical -> receiver it should work with proper surround?

It's only a couple bucks so I don't mind trying it out.

No no. That audio will not be surround. Read over my original post again.

You you have it pc>tv via hdmi and playstation>tv via hdmi and tv>home theater system via optical input(spdif)

On your tv settings don't hook the pc up in a dvi connection. Just use any old regular hdmi cable

On tv settitngs don't make any special settings for pc audio

When you graphics card is plugged into your tv via HDMI with your tv plugged into your home theater system via optical input, you should get the same surround as you playstation 3.

Also, be aware that not all t.v. shows movies or games provide 5.1 dolby digital surround.

If you have netflix, play a Episode of Office (Which has 5.1) while they are in the office, and you should hear people chattering in the backround in your rear speakers to test.
