$500~ Gaming Build

Thread Starter
I've been trying to build a gaming computer for awhile, and while no matter what I buy it'll be better than the PoS I have now, I want to get something that will last for awhile and HOPEFULLY be able to run BF3 later this year. Can someone help me make sure all of this is compatible, and maybe help me get the price below $500, maybe $450 if that's at all possible?

I'd prefer not to bother with overclocking, as this is the first computer I'll be building from scratch(swapped out ram and gpu's before), and I'm a bit worried about heat and all of that.

Mobo: ASRock 970 EXTREME4 AM3+ Same price as M4A87TD with more future proofing.

Otherwise you have found some temporary but decent deals.

^This. The AM3+ board will allow u to upgrade to bulldozer in the future and Asrock makes quality boards. Everything else looks good, you should be able to run BF3 maybe at medium settings. If you do want to overclock in the future it is not very hard. You can find lots of guides on this site for that processor and invest 20-30 bucks in a decent cpu cooler.

edit: get the Samsung f3 instead, faster and much more reliable than that Seagate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...k=samsung%20f3

Throw in that ASRock board and the build is ideal for the price
The Samsung F3 1TB is $5 cheaper shipped on Superbiiz and is the better choice for HDD speed.

How difficult is it to overclock the motherboard? From what it looks like the motherboard only supports 1600 with an OC. Am I wrong in this assumption or do I need to find different ram?

If you want to start learning overclocking, overclock the graphics card first. It is the easiest thing to overclock since you just use a software like MSI afterburner and don't have to reboot every time and its much easier to learn than ocing ur cpu. OCing the gpu also gives the biggest increase in frame rates in games.

Ignore what motherboards say about memory support. Because the memory controller is on the CPU and not motherboard that is no longer as much an issue.

AMD specs their Phenom II memory controller for 1333Mhz, but all Phenom II processors will run RAM up to 1600Mhz through the x8 multiplier. Note that at 1600Mhz you will have to overclock your CPU-NB to at least 2400Mhz to remove any bottleneck (3x the memory clock before DDR), this is why AMD does not spec their memory controller for more than 1333Mhz. With how many DIMMs can you run 1333 or 1600Mhz depends on memory controller revision.
