Will a 6990+6970 Max out eyefinity(3X1920X1080)?

post #1 of 9
Thread Starter
I want to add another 6970 to make it tri fire, so that i can maybe max out eyefinity with 3 screens. Hopefully i can max out bf3 with this setup, or close to it, does this seem possible? They would both be on water/oc

A 6990 will max out BC2 just fine, so BF3 should be close aswell. Also, gonna need another rad, and a much better one than that for trifire.

not really max out...

if you are talking high levels of AA then no.

it also depends on what you think is an acceptable minimum FPS.

I play BC2 @ 3240x1920 with full detail and 4xAA (I also you adaptive Multi sampling in CC) and I average around 150fps in eyefinity. Note that this res is more demanding than 5760x1080p.

Even with this average FPS I still dip down into the 30s at times of huge explosions. I have my cards at 1ghz core too.

Uh... they're the same amount of pixels which means they're the same demanding wise lol

3240x1920 = 6220800 Pixels
5760x1080 = 6220800 Pixels

No matter what, three 1920x1080 monitors regardless of how you align them will always equal 6220800 pixels.

For BF3 you'd probably need another 6990 at that resolution. You essentially have a single 6970 per screen, and during the E3 demo they had a GTX 580 (not sure of the res though).

yeah but the GPU renders the ratios differently mate. I have benched on both settings so believe me, I know.

I have no idea why the performance differs, but it does.

I was really hoping 6990 would hold its own with FPS running in eyefinity.

Could you keep the resolution to 1920 X 1080 across three monitors to get an higher FPS or would that defeat the purpose ?

im currently on the fence to buy a 6970 to drop it in there. I am in the middle of my WC install so would be nice to drop it in before the loop is finished.

Currently I have 1 6990 and 1 EK water block.

Well I just got another 6970 today and I maxed BC2 out and get around 50FPS most of the time with dips to 40. Just Cause 2 maxed at 8x AA I see from 33-60FPS, before I could not get playable FPS maxed out I had to turn AA to 2 and water down to medium and SSAO of to get playable FPS. SO I think you will be fine with another 6970 and save your money. From what I have seen a lot of people do not see a benefit to Trifire with most games I think because of the drivers being plenty crappy.

Trifire should be more than enough power to lay it down.
