Planning to buy later this year, where are we in terms of 'generation'

Thread Starter
Hey guys, my last purchase/build was just a couple month after the first i7 920 came out, and I was pretty 'in the loop' at the time. I knew I was getting the latest and greatest with an X58 mobo and LGA 1156 cpu and got a 5870 soon after.

Seeing a P68 + LGA 1155 and GTX580 is about the latest sort of thing now, I'm just wondering where we are with this generation of hardware. Are we smack in the middle of it? Is the new line of stuff coming at the end of this year or sooner?

I know how it goes and everyone says if you keep waiting for the next thing, you'll never buy anything, but I just want to get an idea of where we are with this gen and when and what's coming next gen.

For a gamer SB is more then enough, paired along with any current gen card your good to go.

But the new hardware, Intel is releasing socket 2011 sometime late this year (rumors say dec 9), Nvidia releasing 6xx sometime early next year. From what I've heard, ATIs 7xxx series is due late this year but I'm not positive on that.

So right now if your looking to upgrade your rig it's not worth it with the current gen, waiting for either the price to drop or next gen to come would be a better choice.

As Yumyums said SB is more than enough and was correct on the rumor's of releases for the Nvidia 6xx series and AMD/ATI's 7xxx series

However, if you are going to buy the parts for the system in lets say a year and you want best of the best- Then wait for when the ivy bridge intel processor's come out and the next gen GPU's to be released.

At the end of 2011 all the stuff we have now won't be very worth it. or at least when all the new processors, gpu's, etc. are released.
