SERER power problem

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I have a server that I built using a standard Computer tower case, I believe it is a rosewill destroyer.

I have an AMD Athon II x4 processor
ASRock 880 motherboard
4gb ram
and 5 HDDs.

The problem that I am having is that I recently installed the 5th HDD, ever since the server has been telling me that HDD have failed. After switching sata cables and power cables the problem seems to subside for a while.

Initially I thought the problem was that the new HDD was bad or failing. So I returned the "defective" drive to Newegg which took about 2 weeks.

During this two week period I had no problem with any drives, however the same problem persisted when I installed the new HDD.

So I now think that the problem is with the power supply. I believe that it does not have enough power to sustain the additional drives.

What do you guys think?

SO i have been looking for DIFFERENT PSU options, HOWEVER I would like to know if "server" power supplies will fit into the traditional computer case that I have.

do SERVER power supplies adhere to the traditional ATX power supply foot print?

IF NOT: I am looking for a PSU with substantial power ability with SUBSTANTIAL sata & MOLEX connectors.

PREFERABLY second hand, I LIKE TO BUY USED, I like GOOD deals!

let me know what you have!

What is your current PSU? I currently run my 10TB, with 10 drives, server with a 500W Cooler Master PSU.

A quick search on Newegg shows several PSUs with over 10 SATA connectors.

I have a 380W Seasonic S12 in one of my servers, and it powers 8 WD RE3s and 4 Seagate Savvios, in addition to the MB/CPU/RAM plus 2 RAID cards and 2 dual-port NICs.

A decent PSU will have no trouble with 5 drives, but a crap one might struggle...

I agree. I had a Tagan 480W unit in my machine a few years back - ASUS PC-DL Deluxe, dual socket 604 Xeons @ 3.06Ghz, 2GB DDR and about 14 250GB HDs. Came home one day to find the machine shut down, and when I turned it on smoke and the smell of something burnt billowed out of the blowholes. Upgraded to an 850W Touchpower and never had a problem.

My sig. rig currently has seven HDs powered by a Corsair HX520.
