100% Newb Folder, please get me started :)

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
I'm thinking that if I post in this section, the thread should probably be really important, but unfortunately, i'm just looking for some guidance.

I found out about folding@home a few weeks ago when I was researching grid computing, I thought the cause was pretty cool, but never bothered to take part.

Then yesterday I found folding@home again, and maybe it was just an "in the moment" thing, but I completely just fell in love with it, and just thought "GET. ME. IN. THERE." so I downloaded the folding@home client, and let it run while I played Zeno Clash (hey, its only 4 bucks this weekend. Gotta make the best of it )

Anyways, unfortunately, while I was playing on my laptop, I had a power outage for a few seconds (didnt notice it as my laptop runs on battery), and the client went out on my desktop. So i didnt see any of my progress.

So basicly, what I'm asking for is;

What client should I download for a 24/(not 7, but a few days at a time atleast) folder? more or less completely dedicated?

How do I get into a folding team on overclock.net?

What does "ppd" mean? How do I check it?

How can I get into the folding community?

My rig is just a mildly old desktop PC:
Windows 7
2 GB of RAM
AMD Dual Core 2.2 GHz processor
Nvidia Geforce 6150 SE nForce 430

I know, it's literally nothing special, but I wanna get into this folding thing and I wanna do some good!

Follow this guide: [Windows 7] Setting up the SMP client (v6.34)

That'll get you set up and folding for OCN. The client will just run in the background while your PC is on.

PPD is Points Per Day. As you complete work units you receive points for your work. When people use the term PPD its usually meant as a measure of how many points a CPU or graphics card can receive if running 24 hours a day.

You can check your PPD out put using HFM.net (a folding client monitor program). The above guide include instruction on how to set it up. I've set up mine so I can monitor it online.

Post away! Also we are having a Foldathon next week. Two days of folding to see how many points you can accumulate (with prizes for participating).

Every folder contributes. But once you start beware, it'll become an obsession. You'll no longer look at new computer parts for how they improve your FPS in games or how fast that CPU can encode video. You'll be trying to figure how much of a PPD increase you'll get.

Ah okay thanks.

But three more questions;

SMP client only corresponds to using multiple cores doesnt it?

What about my GPU? can I run a second client simultaneously that focuses on using my GPU?

Also, how do I get "registered" on folding@home? (Assign a passcode to my username, assign myself to a team, etc)

Also, is there any folding teams on overclock.net that doesnt mind taking up a completely new folder?

Yes. SMP is for multi core processors. You'll get more PPD folding with SMP.

You can run multiple clients (CPU and GPU) on the same machine. But you'll need a Geforce 8xxx or newer card to fold. A perfect excuse to upgrade!

Instructions for entering a user name, passkey and a team number is done through the setup guide above.

You can see if the name you'd like to use is available here: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download#ntoc2

You can get a passkey here: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py Most of us use our forum name to avoid confusion.

zodac regularly keeps a thread in the forum with teams that are looking for members. There are usually specific requirements (i.e. specific hardware) teams are looking for from members. Just keep your eyes open for a qualifying position.

This is completely true!! I was upset because an old Gateway I had is set up and just folding 24/7 (I don't use it for anything else) and it was only producing about 500 PPD, so what did I do, I went out this weekend, bought a cheap GTX460, slapped into the Gateway and now its seeing about 10,000 PPD. Did I need this? No. Do I care about FPS? No. Am I using this computer for anything more now that it has a decent graphics card? No. But I wanted more folding points, and this was a cheap way to get it out of an old computer. Now I just have to figure out what to do with the 2 other old Gateways and the old Dell I have sitting around!!
