Build for a friend - Help Reduce Price/Improve parts

Thread Starter
Ok so basically my friend is wanting to build his own computer. Thing is hes never built his own and has asked me to help him pick the parts. He is stuck on getting a GTX 580 too and he wants longevity with this too so i picked the 3gb version. All other specs are attached. Is there anyway to reduce the price anymore? I've tried to get him to go with the extreme4 instead of the extreme 6 because he doesnt need it but he's intent on getting it because its also what i'm getting for my build. Hes gonna do a moderate overclock, 4.5 GHz, since he wants me to do that too. The price of the hyper 212+ increased in price by a lot since i've bought it and i was convinced there was better performing CPU coolers in the same price range. If you could help with that too it would be appreciated.

EDIT: just so you know my friend can be a bit stubborn and i've tried to tell him multiple times that for what he's doing, mostly gaming, he doesnt need a few things that he wanted. He basically wanted my exact same rig i was planning on building this september but i'm gonna be using it for autocad, arcgis, and microstation and he didnt need some of the parts i was getting.

Well he probably doesn't need the 3gb version of the 580 unless he going with more than one monitor.

But the 3gb will get a better resale value for down the road. Also you don't need a 850w psu for that build. A 650w would be more than enough. Again unless he will go sli in the future of course.

Save 83 bucks right there.

he plans on doing SLI next year when Keplars come out so he wanted what he needed now so he didnt have to buy twice. I don't know if he is planning on doing multi monitor but he was dead set on the 3gb versions.. Tried to convince but he shot me down..

Ok then the 850w will do Sli 580s no problem.

Also tell him that the 3gb versions of the 580 doesn't quite OC as well as the 1.5gb variants.

Will do. I don't know if he's gonna want me to overclock his 580 though. Told him that it was pretty simple but it can go wrong faster then overclocking a CPU. Scared him a bit and he said that he would think about overclocking it later.

I was wondering if you had any advice about the cpu cooler? I know the hyper 212+ was a great cpu cooler due to its price/performance ratio, but now that its $50 i was thinking twice about him getting it. Any ideas about that?

Sorry for the double post but I was wondering If the thermaltake frio would be a good cooler for around $50-$60??

If he doesn't plan to SLI, a 650-750W psu is enough. Here are two good Seasonic psus at much lower prices than that corsair. Seasonic is a manufacturer for corsair psus so the quality is about the same. 850W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151100 modular x750 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151087

I would Also get a Samsung F3 instead, way more reliable than that Seagate.
