Looking for advice for my first build. - Page 2

Ok. Just so you know, the odds of the 720 unlocking to a quad is good.

But, if you must have the 955:

Mobo: ASUS M5A97 AM3+ $108 shipped
CPU: Phenom 955 $110 shipped after promo (ends 7/18)
Case: Thermaltake V4 Black Edition $30 shipped after $10 promo (ends 7/18) and $10 mir
HDD/Optical drive: Samsung F3 1TB/optical drive combo $70 shipped (scroll down to the combos)
PSU: Rosewell RG630 $60 shipped
Memory: Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2 x 2GB) $36 shipped
GPU: EVGA GTX460 - Bstock $110 shipped. 90 day warranty, so test thoroughly once assembled. EVGA is good about replacements.

$524 shipped after rebates ($10 in mirs)

This still lets you keep AM3+ mobo (far superior to asrock 870 which is still 4+1 power phase).
It's so little!

Feature freaks may be a fan of this board. Otherwise I like badwrench's above build

You could get away with a 350w PSU, or be safe and get like 400-450w.

Here is a Newegg Shell Shocker Deal, slightly overkill but great PSU for a low price: http://www.newegg.com/Special/ShellS...0-_-07182011_2

Here is one for $28 after MIR: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139026

I just noticed a few more questions here needing to be answered:

Most ~600W PSUs will have something like a 6 pin and 6+2 pin PCIE connections. More can be added with Molex adapters and that's usually fine.

Quote:
Lastly, any thoughts on the motherboard? Having never built a PC, I don't know exactly how motherboard brands rank.
for AMD mobos I look at it as follows:

GigaByte and Asus lead the pack. Pick either with confidence, buy based on price/features.

MSI: Used to be a leader, then they weren't, then they were, then they weren't. Quality depends on specific board and when it was made. All over the map. I default to avoiding them all-together.

ASRock, Biostar: More value oriented. Great boards for the money.

ECS, Foxconn, Jetway, who? (they might make some good ones but you don't see much discussion about these board makers. probably for good reason)

Quote:
What I do know is that this one has everything want (including stuff like USB3.0 which I don't even need), all for a joy of a price. A quick question about SLI though. The motherboard says it supports Hybrid SLI or something.
Hybrid SLI is not available on a 870 chipset. Hybrid SLI is the joining of integrated GPUs with an installed GPU and only applies to motherboards with nvidia integrated GPUs. I would personally not want to risk messing with an SLI hack. Long term support for SLI hacked configurations may get better or worse with time. Imagine 3-5 years down the road when all the modern AMD chipsets support SLI (SLI hack support dries up), and you're trying to find SLI hack software for Windows 8... Good luck.

Quote:
It has a PCIe 2.0 16x and a PCIe 4x. From the stuff I have read, this means when you hook up 2 cards, they both run in 8x mode.
Some boards support 8x8x operation, some do not. Unless 8x8x operation is specifically mentioned, it should be assumed that the board does NOT support it (only supports 16x4x). CrossFire with AMD cards can be done on boards with 16X/4X operation. SLI requires 8x/8x operation to work (as far as I understand at this time).

Quote:
The guy from Nvidia I talked to said that this doesn't adversely affect performance very much. Is this all true.
16X/4X operation is known to cause bottlenecking on many card configurations when CrossFire is used (SLI not available). 8X/8X has plenty of bandwidth for most card combinations not to run into significant bottlenecks.

Since you're not planning on OCing much I think the ASROCK mobo options would be a really good value for you.

The following would be the SLI supporting rig:

$537 shipped after EMCKCJH37 and EMCKCJH24 promo codes.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827118039
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157262

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371044

955, 1TB, M59, CD/DVD, GTX460SE, G.Skill 2x2GB 1600, ASRock 970 (sli support), 650W EarthWatts.

Those promo codes expire today. Not sure how much longer some of those other prices will last. There could be better deals tomorrow, who knows.

Excellent. Thanks for all the help mdocod and everyone else who helped.
I will probably buy some of these components from Amazon though, since I have a $100 dollar GC as well as the fact that some are cheaper.
