SSD sata II vs sata III speeds

Thread Starter
Does any one know if their a big difference in speed between a sata 2 and sata 3 SSD. Im just looking at buying my first ssd and a 80g OCZ Vertex 2 sata II is just a bit cheaper in price then a 60G OCZ Agility 3 sata III.

Would it be worth to buy a sata3 with less space over the sata2 with more?

Outside of benchmarks, you won't know the difference

I might have seen a minuscule improvement moving my SSD from SATA 3 Gbps to SATA 6 Gbps but can't tell if it was placebo or not.

Therefore, as has already been determined (and had already influenced your decision tongue.gif), you won't really notice the difference.

Nevermind, Im just confusing myself.

Either way, 90% of the time your SSD is not working at the "max" listed in the specs, so SATA II/III does not make a difference. Vertex 2 Vs Agility 3 will make a difference, though, just not the SATA II/III part specifically. Youll most likely be better off with the larger drive, as long as its a 34nm.

Huh?
I think you are confusing Gb/s with GB/s
1GB/s=8Gb/s
1 Byte=8 bit

I don't know too many drives which cannot do over 1Gb/s...

Most SSDs already saturate the SATA II interface which is 3Gb/s=375MB/s theoritical
The actual maximum observed has been 285MB/s in sequential for the Sandforce controllers. The Sata III interface is 6Gb/s=750MB/s in theory but you can assume that different overhead would make the actual maximum bus speed more like 600MB/s.

Depending on what you do, you may or may not benefit from the increase in sequential speed the new SATA III drives offer. For some people, it is very significant.
