MSI GTX 580 Lightning Xtreme; worth it?

Thread Starter
Is the MSI N580GTX Lightning Xtreme card really worth the $600 price tag? Are they really deserving of all the praise they've been given? I plan on SLI'ing these bad boys, and I'm just curious as to whether a single GTX 590 would pose better temperatures, power efficiency, and value, all while accomplishing roughly the same thing.

First welcome to OCN

Well the GTX 580 Lightning get great over clocks.

Naturally you'll save a deal more value going one dual GTX 590. The 590 is a great card but not a great over clocker. It's basically two watered down GTX 580's.

However two over clocked GTX 580 Lightnings will beat out one GTX 590 by quite a bit. Check out the link on my sig **Nvidia GTX 580 Overclockers Club** thread and the first page will show you some pretty hefty over clocks by the cards.

The Nvidia GTX 590 Owners Club has been working on a couple of modified BIOS's that are getting some good results. Check out their thread and read up. They are over coming an obstacle without Nvidia's help and doing a good job as they've improved it's performance. [GTX 590] Flashing & Overclocking Thread . Not sure how much percentage gains between the two.

The non-reference cards have better coolers than the reference cards getting higher over clocks. I'd say on air about 32Mhz better. I hit 923Mhz Core myself on my reference. Got pretty decent 3DMark11 score.

Do you homework and judge for yourself.

It depends if you're looking at 2560x1600 or greater resolutions or not.

If you are, the 3GB memory will be of use to you. If you aren't then the 3GB of memory won't be as much use to you, and you will be fine with the regular Lightning.

if you plan to overclock them and you want surround gaming then ya they are the best

the lightning extreme have double the memory then the GTX590 and even at stock they leave dust to a GTX590 even at resolutions when both card have enough memory at high resolution the different is huge!

and if you overclock those monsters (and they are awesome at this) you can reach even higher.

I envy you guys who can even consider SLI-ing 2 of those bad boys. In my eyes, they are massively overpriced (meaning you dont get great performence/price ratio), but it must be a blast having them, clocking and gaming on. So if you can afford it, i'd say its definitely worth it.

LOL thanks Arazonian for the welcome, I'm loving this community so far.

Yeah, I don't know which I should do. I've read that the new Nvidia cards (Kepler) are right around the corner, and I don't want to go spending $1400 (after taxes) on a setup that could have been vastly better had I just waited a few months. I'm considering just maybe getting the 590 until then, and save myself the money and hassle.

Not right around the corner. Being pushed back already. Just like the first run of 40nm fabrication chips were when they first came out.

Report: AMD to Release 28nm GPUs Before Nvidia

Southern Islands code name for AMD's 28 fabrication is due out about November/December. Kepler to be out by Feb 2012 by both companies suggestions to news sources.

However it seems that 28nm yields are still low and AMD will be delayed even futher which might put it closer to Nvidia's release time frame.

So history is repeating itself like the first gen of 40nm fabrication chips did with major delays. If your thinking of buying a new card and have been waiting it seems your wait is going to be much futher than first anticipated.

you may need to wait for over half a year

I dont think this is what they call around the corner lol

I thought too that 28nm GPU's will be released soon when I bought my rig AMD for example sad it will be on the start of the tired quarter of 2011

and as it look now it wont be out until 2012 so ya, it was delayed, and will be delayed farther...
