If can go 4 ways of courese that 4 GTX580 will be the best choice, but you can only go for 3 ways, so the best choice is that two 6990 of course, but the question is why you don't go for two 590? GIGABYTE's 590 product give you a M8000X mouse as a present, it can be sold about $90, if getting two of that can save a little money for you.

The 2x 6990 seems like your best choice IMO.
3x sli gtx 580s scale better imo. The 2x 6990 is essentially a quad xfire. quad card setups have much worst scaling than tri card setups. For example in some cases 4x 580s is slower than 3x 580s. Just make sure u get the 3gb 580s since ur resolution is so high.

Yupp quad gpu setups are just for E-PEEN, it is slower than the same cards in a tri sli setup.

With that kind of resolution, the 3gb's will definitely run a lot smoother than a 2gb; higher the resolution, the more vRam consumed. And as the above have said, tri SLI scales MUCH better than quad GPU setups with today's current games.

Effectively the argument here is the VRam buffer:
- 2gb effective on the 6990's
VS
- 3gb effective on the 580's

When comparing the 2, regardless of horsepower, the 6990's will hit their limit far before the 580's...

There is a thread here, where Skyline pushes the VRAM buffer to the limit with forcing as much AA as possible through NVCP.

So there are alot of instances where 2gb is limiting, but as yet there are no instances of 3gb being a limiting factor.

Hope this helps you in making your decision...

Cheers,

Ishi
