Your PSU could also have helped this issue along, although you don't really have a huge 12v load going on there with only a GT210 installed.
This! The power phase design of that board really can't cope with a hexacore thuban.

Those are all VRM failures indeed, the symptoms are correct.
You didn't overclock any time?

This is common with the MSI 790FX-GD70 and 6 cores... but 4 times in a row at stock and with stock cooler, oooh that is going to look bad for MSI

hahahah oh man, i did this last year and learned the hard way on a 1090t. I bought a 965 and a week later the x6 came out and I was like ***, so I bought one, threw it on my brand new 790fx. I got that baby running full speed ahead, hit 4.2ghz and was like, oh my god, this is awesome...threw on intel burn test and .....fizzle.....she died. And I did it with my RMA too....fizzle.....stuck to the 965 until just recently

Thread Starter
The sad thing is: I am not even over-clocking, just running at 3.0GHz set by the BIOS.

And the supposedly failure analysis result by MSI just tell me that the board is dead. Apparently they smell some burning smell when they turned on their power supply. (different result from mine.) Then they said it was not worth pursuing and sent me the 4th motherboard replacement.

As I understand it, this motherboard was a reference design by AMD. I am wondering where did it go wrong? Do other manufacturers' AMD790FX chipset-based motherboards have the same problem? Thanks!

Crap-tastic MSI quality control strikes again.

Weird. I do have a friend who is running a 1090 + the 790fx-gd70 @ 4ghz @ 1.41v. no problems from him for more then ~6months. board was bought from near launch, Haven even been rmaed. but.. he only turn it on on weekends as he is in the army and only get back during the weekends.

And there is a long list of people with similar set ups who have blown their 'fets. What's your point?
Thats right it doesn't make the board bad. it will however be worthless for over clocking or high wattage CPUs

With the Phenom II as an x2 or as an x4?
If an x2 you must have had a really bad FET on the board (i.e. shouldn't have went through QC pass).  I've heard of 870A-G54s burning with x2s but the G54 doesn't even have VRM cooling on it, plus it didn't use DRIVER MOSFETs and used lower quality regular FETs that could run hotter.
