Pentium 4 rig not loading XP after BSOD

Rig is a Packard Bell iMedia 1408
P4 516 @ 2.93GHz, 2GB DDR333 RAM, 160GB Seagate HD, Asus P5S800-VM, BFG 7600GS, XP Home SP3.

It has Avast installed, and my folks (this is the family PC) went to update it from 6.0 to 6.1, and apparently during the Initializing stage of it, the computer generated a BSOD. No idea of codes or messages on it, I wasn't present at the time. Now, it will log in, it will show the wallpaper and do the startup jingle, but it sticks at that. HDD light shows no activity during this time. Attempting to boot into Safe Mode gives me a list of drivers, constant HDD activity, and no progress after 5-10 minutes.

Initially I thought it was overheating due to the CPU fan (case has no ventilation and the fan is on its way out) but the fan is still spinning fine.

What can I do to get it to work again? And what caused this BSOD?

I will attempt to get dmp files off it (using my trusty Ubuntu Live CD and a spare USB) and analyse them with Blue Screen View if I can.

It could be anything, hardware or software. What I advice you is to copy any important data and then try to eliminate hardware faults (memory, HDD, PSU,...) with the usual testing routines. If the hardware is fine then booting from a Linux LiveCD should work normally and the next step would be to try to recover the Win OS and/or reinstall it as needed. If by any chnace you do reinstall you may want to use MSE as antivirus.

Somehow its working, after a failed System Restore, several combinations of reboots and booting into safe mode.

I'm backing up everything as a precaution. I leave them with Avast because they know how it works, and its easier than teaching them how to use MSE.

I will try and get the dmp files off it and analyse them tomorrow.
