getting wet for the first time

Thread Starter
i finally turn to water - after years of hesitation i decided to watercool everything for my upcoming build. though never had any experience with WC setups i have to ask few questions.
the idea is to have a very quite computer, atm i have a fairly quite rig with 13 speed controlled fans inside. all set to minimum i still get good cooling potential.
i stuck a quick picture of what i roughly wanna do. the aim is to have everything attached to the antec 1200 case - i dont want any external rads dangling about as i have limited space. so i though using 2 240mm rads fixed internally, tank sitting on the psu, pump on the bottom of the case. im planning to get crosshair 5 mb but thinking of waiting for full mb waterblock. no brand made it yet but it seems like EK is developing it & as soon as its released im planning to upgrade my rig with crosshair 5, 8gb ddr3 corsair, asus 6970 & then top bulldozer when it comes out (can use phenom 2 965 for now). basically the full mb waterblock is the hold up at the moment.
when it comes to hardware i like to stick with the brand so it looks similar. in my case i'll have to go with EK it seems. i been reading about some bad batch of EK nickel plated parts. im puzzled whether what blocks i must go for? i dont really wanna go for copper as i know it loose colour in some time. but if i go for nickel plated parts then all blocks must be nickel plated right? also what water would you recommend in such setup? also how powerful the pump supposed to be? im also still cant decide what size tubes/fittings i must use? the way i see it 10mm is adequate enough - not sure what fittings i must use since there are so many of them around...

Remember with all the fans-no matter how many you have, you can't get below ambient.

i'd try koolance, xspc, but my favorite are blocks from aqua computers from aquatuning.us

for tubing id go 3/8 to 1/2 ID.you can just you any G 1/4 fittings/barbs in the market, usually bitspower.and for the water you're going to use i'd suggest clear pre mixed ones or distilled water with killcoil and/or antifreeze(optional). if you want it colored just grab colored tubing since dyes/pre mixed colored coolants may gunk on your system.

I use the dangerDen blocks... Copper is just too good of a conductor of heat not to use and watch Nickel, at least on the EK blocks. Go at least 3/8" ID if not 1/2" ID on tubing. For a pump, you'll want something a bit larger to account for your several blocks plus the pressure drop you're going to find in the rads. For fittings, I always recommend compression (if you can afford it) just because they give a very clean look and I've never had an issue out of them, but simple barb fittings with zip ties or clamps work fine as well. If space is tight make sure you look into 90 or 45 degree fittings. Always try and develop a push pull setup on your radiators with fans + shrouds if you can. Distilled water + biocide (of some sort) works well for a coolant at low cost, I'd look into nanofluids if you're looking a bit more high performance.

Also you might want to get some primoCill antikink coils if you're navigating tight spaces so that you doing kink your tubing

ok this is the shopping list i've got so far (minus mb full block):

cpu:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/ek-su...939754940am2-3

gpu:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/ek-fc...-radeon-hd6970

ram:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/ek-ra...etalplusnickel

rad (x2):
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/ek-co...d-xt-%28240%29

pump:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/ek-d5...etal-g1-4-rev2
OR
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/ek-dc...12v-dc-pump%29

tank:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/ek-mu...apacity-285-ml

fittings (x16):
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/ek-ps...3mm-g1-4-black

still dont know what size pump i must go for? 400L/h or 800L/h - if water streams through faster does it make it cool better?

also not sure about the tank size... the one ive chosen can only be placed horizontally - is that possible with conal res?

having everything on one loop will 2 240mm rads be enough? i can make the back one be 360mm... since the fans will always be set to minimum speed will that cooling capacity be enough?
for rads I'd go with 2 of these rather then EK as the xspc rx are better
http://specialtech.co.uk/spshop/cust...-pid-7874.html

also http://specialtech.co.uk has alot more choice so you can avoid EK crap if you wish

As for the order of your loop, to get maximum efficiency I would do my loop in this order:

Res>Pump>Rad1>CPU>Northbridge>Rad2>GPU>RAM>Res

You will see very little benefit of having it go from rad to res to pump to rad since the water can only get so cool, but allowing it to cool some components and then go through a rad would yield better temps.

And to answer your question about which pump, I would go for something that can handle a lot of resistance, you're going to have to pump a good amount of water to go through all those blocks and rads. You only have one pump listed, the first for 25 is just a top, not the actual pump. But the D5 pump is a very good choice, so that's probably what I would recommend if it's available to you.
