Asus RT-N56U --- Need Help w/ Setup

post #1 of 4

Hey all!

Okay, so I don't know much about networking/setting up my home network. I have the Asus RT-N56U router running Firmware vers. 1.0.1.4m and a LOT of connections going through it (two hard-wired desktops, 3 laptops on wireless, a PS3 wireless a.t.m., and usually 1 or 2 mobiles). This is usually not all at the same time thank god, but typically 1 desktop and 1 laptop are always on.

I basically have all defaults set except for one open port. The router is upstairs and all the wireless clients are downstairs (the 'modem' is restricted to a corner in an upstairs room...lame, I know). SO. Are there any tips and tricks that would help boost my signal for the downstairs clients, give me stronger bandwidth, or enable a very stable connection (sometimes I get internet outages saying something about the router experiencing DNS errors)? Plus, even hard-wired with Cat6, I'm still only getting 18 mps...

Any help or tips would be great! Thanks.

P.S.
-I know moving the router downstairs would help my signal for the downstairs clients...but, for convenience at the moment, let's assume that the router is only limited to the upstairs room. biggrin.gif

You can setup another router as an extender or repeater downstairs to help cover more area. May not help if it's in an area that has weak signal from upstairs though, if you can run a line to this, then it will work well.

Also, 18Mbps is decent, my Time Warner connection is 10Mbps and jumps to 20Mbps when they turbo boost. Unless you are paying for a higher connection, I don't see anything wrong with 18Mbps.

you could buy a DD WRT Compatible router and set it up as an extender or repeater: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices
heres a helpful list of all the compatible routers

Ya actually I do have an old Linksys WRT54G that I flashed to dd-wrt downstairs. I hooked it up to the PS3 as a Client-bridge so I could give it the most bandwidth...but I guess I'll try just setting it as a repeater as you guys suggest. I was thinking that maybe there were some settings in the Asus rt-n56u that I could change to increase the transmission or stabilize the bandwidth.

@Jonowxeno:
And ya, I suppose 18 mbps is fine...but for some reason I thought I should be getting something like a consistent 30 mbps through time warner. Ha of course that'd be be awesome, but probably not realistic unless I upgrade to a business-grade internet plan, huh?
