need help to get 4ghz stable!

post #1 of 18
Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I've just been learning how to overclock recently and i have hit 3.4 stable with my i7 920 C0 chip at 1.25volts.my chip is very hungry for vcore.

I have tried messing around with the bios and i booted with 4ghz today but i can't get it stable.it crashes within 10minutes of prime on large ffts.it also gets wayyyy too hot.hitting 80 on load with watercooling.

here are my settings of what i can remember

multi=21
bclck=191
uncore is double ram speed
ram speed=1532mhz or summin at 9-9-9-24 cas
turbo off

vcore=1.47v really hungry, will boot at 1.45 but will freeze instantly when prime runs
pll=1.88v
qpi=1.35v
ram=1.64v
ioh=1.2
ich-1.2

speedstep and all that stuff disabled.

any settings that are wrong or that i can adjust to get a stable oc?
ask me anything if ive missed out anything and i will try find the settings for you.

any help is appreciated! and thanks for your comments in the future!

1.47 seems way too high, try 1.4 with cpu at 200x20, ram at 200x8, uncore at 200x(2x8+1)

i know the r3e mobo is more than capable of running 200blck

and to be honest, if you don't fold or do a lot of video encoding, turn off ht too, i've come to realise that for the causal users and gamers, ht gives nothing but heat...

I like my HT on to me its not as exciting with HT off.

but just now I tried HT off and i discovered on my chip HT adds 15C to my load temps and the voltage can probs drop down abit too.

are you overclocking your ram alot? why the 1.64 voltage for your 1.5v ram?

Your ram should run at rated speed (1600 I'm assuming) at 1.5v even if you are overclocking the hell of your cpu.

Here are the bios settings that I am using for my 4.33 OC in case they might help you-

In my opinion your ram is going to limit your overclock a bit as your ram speed increases with your clock speed. I was only able to get 3.99 GHz when I was using some 1866 dominators but then was able to get this oc using 2000 Mhz dominators. Your results may vary, but I thought you would be interested in taking a look at the voltages and other settings.

Good luck

yeah know what you mean, getting an i7 and turn ht off is a bit lame, but if stability or heat is an issue, i guess it's worth considering, 15'c at load is a hell a lot of temp drop. i tried with ht off as well, i can back down vcore about 0.03v

I edited my post above with some screenies of my bios settings for you. My ioh/ich is quite a bit higher than yours... maybe try bumping yours and see if it helps. I've been running this clock for about a year with no problems although load temps are a bit warm.
