Need help building server for my needs/wants!

Thread Starter
Hey all I am looking to build my first server, I am unsure what to go with hardware wise for my needs. I am looking to use the server as hosting files (being able to access them from anywhere), my printer, backups, I would like to be able to have it as a dvr/htpc (if possible), now I would really like to play with AD and such. Being a student I have access to all windows server for free unless another solution is better, I am not scared of linux and such. Thanks

This is what we use for the same purpose: http://www.overclock.net/system.php?i=65804

We only have 1.5TB of storage currently as the second drive is a backup. Every night, any changes are cloned to that drive with SyncBack. We used to have an Athlon II x2 250 which worked great but since we live convert videos and stream them to our tablets (AirVideo) we wanted something a little beefier. We're just using Windows 7 Pro and since Server doesn't have Media Center (can it even be installed on Server?) you might want to to stick with a regular version.

I would recommend just running Windows 7 and adding a TV card since Windows Media Center can do TV recording and such.

I would go with Win 7 if your looking to go the DVR route with that as your only box. Long and short of it, get a fairly modern CPU, motherboard that supports gigabit (didn't realize how important this was at first), a handful of good quality 2TB SATA drives, and a video card that from the last couple generations. Also might want a Blu-ray reader. Personally I like the idea of a file server that stores all my Blu-ray/DVD backups, recorded content, and files as well as having a small HTPC hooked up the TV with a Cable Card tuner.

As a former CS student, I found Virtualbox or VMware to be the best way to test things out on because of the snapshot functionality. Also if you want to start over, it's really quick.

Well I have a verizon DVR so I dont have to have the htpc route but is there a way to link them so I can pull off media from the DVR and have a server host it?

You will need a TV Tuner Card to capture the recordings. I don't think you can grab it directly from the DVR's hard drive.
