Help overclocking 955 BE

Thread Starter
Hey all. I just overclocked my 955 BE to 3.8Ghz from 3.2 the other day. I just ran Prime95 for about 8.5 hours last night and there was no problems at all and it seems very stable.

My only concern is that I did not touch the CPU voltage,HT,and NB at all when I was overclocking it in the bios. The CPU voltage remained as it was in the bios and that is 1.45v. I'm just wondering is that a good voltage for this overclock? Or should I bump it up a little? and if so how?

And also I want to overclock my 955 BE to 4Ghz. Can anyone give me advice on that aswell?

My mobo is a Asus Crosshair IV Formula and my CPU Cooler is a H70.

The temperatures I got while running prime95 was: Low-41 High-60 are those good temperature numbers for this overclock? It pretty hot here in toronto as were getting heat alerts smile.gif

Just to give a little reference here is my CPU-Z info: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1912794

If your overclock is running stable, then there is no reason to increase the voltage. Doing so will only generate more heat.

Should I lower my voltage to reduce less heat? I'd like to have a cooler chip smile.gif

Usually 3.8Ghz is the high people hit without having to raise voltages.

Weird thing is my voltage was at 1.4V and I raised to 1.45V.

Leave it as is, try raising to 4Ghz and see how well it goes. If not, raise voltage by .25

ONLY raise voltages when its not stable. Just so it has more power in it, As Leeee said it will generate more heat this way.

I would also try to keep your temps below 62C smile.gif So if you see yourself hitting 63C or above just turn down the OC a little.

Mine gets to 4Ghz on 1.375V lucky i guess and its stable. But i increased to 1.425v just for the sake of it...

Not sure why your voltages were at 1.45V in the first place smile.gif If you stay at 3.8Ghz lower your voltage to 1.425V or 1.4V. See if its stable.

if you raise it to 4ghz keep it at 1.45V

How much voltage you need isn't just random or set from a chart, you need to stress test correctly and find the lowest voltage that gives you complete stability.

What are you using, just P95? How long are you running it?

I agree with this. You need to find your chip's best settings by trial and error.

Thanks guys for the advice, ill try lowering my CPU voltage just a bit to about 1.4 and see how that goes if its stable then ill keep going lower until and error comes up.

Yup, I'm using prime95. I ran it last night for about 8.5 hours and everything seemed fine but temperatures could have been better.
