Thread Starter

I'm looking for a sub 200 USD headphone that has powerful bass and a generally wide range. I listen mostly to MGMT, Passion Pit, and other electro pop artists... as well as a good amount of alternative rock and some dubstep and hard style.

So far I have looked into the Sennheiser HD 598's

they seem to be excellent headphones, but they lack in the portability factor and supposedly the open air design makes them less than ideal for public listening.

I also checked out the Bose AE2's and I see they appear to be more practical with a 3.5mm audio jack and a smaller and foldable profile. BUt, I was wondering if they sound as good.
http://www.amazon.com/Bose-329532-00...1010261&sr=1-1

please give me any suggestions- basically I want a sharp and powerful sounding headphone that can be easily used in conjunction with an ipod.

if you want lots of bass the Sony MDR-XB1000 is FOR YOU!
For powerful bass in that price range you will want a closed headphone, as open headphones dont deliver enough punch to be powerful. They may be accurate, but it will lack the volume you want.

You really have two good options right now, AudioTechnica ATH-M50s, or Ultrasone HFI-780s. Both are low impedance, 38 ohm and 35 ohm respecitvley, so they can be used on the go, and both are closed.

The ATH M50s bass should be more "in your face", as the speakers are very close to your ear, as opposed to the HFI 780s, who have a wider soundstage.

However, you would be doing a disservice to yourself to pick up a nice pair of cans like these without a dedicated sound card, so look out for a used Xonar DX, or if you cant find one, even a Xonar DG. These headphones wont really shine unless paired with a quality source, and put through quality hardware, before they reach the headphones themselves.

EDIT: They also both look really good

Another option is the Audio Technica ATH-M50(s).

The Sennheiser HD595 lacks a lot in the bass department.

I own both the HD595 and the ATH-M50s. The M50s have more bass and they collapse into themselves to make them more portable.

No, all open back headphone suggestions are wrong, wrong...and...wrong.

Bass? You're not going to get much with the AD700, the HD555, the HD595 or the newer HD558/598. I've already used the first three I've listed extensively. I also own an HD600 which by all means is better than the HD558/598 line.

What you really should look into are a pair of Ultrasones. Ultrasones are infamous for doing great with electronic music (trance, EDM, etc.). If circumaural (over the ear) is what you're looking for, then a pair of Ultrasone PRO 550, HFI-580, HFI-680, HFI-780 or the DJ1 Pro/non-Pro headphones should be what you're looking for.

Have you considered getting an in-ear though? For portability's sake, that's pretty much the best option.

Sennheiser HD280 for good isolation with good sound. Can be folded.
